Obituary for Sophie Hayes (Gabriel)

Sophia (Gabriel) Hayes, 99, of St. Petersburg, FL, formerly of Hartford, beloved wife of the late Charles C. Hayes, passed away peacefully Monday August 11, 2014 in Florida. Sophie was born in Thompson, CT. on October 18, 1914, daughter of the late Stanislaw and Katarzyna (Szcrypel) Gabriel. She grew up in Hartford and lived there for 97 years prior to moving to Florida with her son. Prior to her retirement, Sophie was employed at Royal Typewriter Co. and retired from Colt Firearms Co. Sophie will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her loving family, her son, Charles “Charlie” Hayes of Largo, FL; her daughter Frances Hayes of Vernon Rockville; and a brother John Gabriel of Enfield. She loved living on the South side of Hartford. She attended St. Augustine Church, where she was a member her entire life. She always remembered the support the church members gave her, which kept her active for so many years. Sophie was a very independent woman and stayed that way until the day she passed. Friends may pay their respects to the family, Friday September 5, 2014 from 3-5 pm at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield, CT. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Sophie’s life will be held Saturday September 6, 2014 at 10:00 at St. Augustine Church, 10 Campfield Ave., Hartford. Burial will follow in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery (Sec M-ext), 1 Cottage Grove Rd., Bloomfield.
