Charlie Ragno

I am proud to say I was Kenny Gwozdz's good friend. Probably the best years of my life were spent at the Gwozdz household and in Enfield's North, back in the late 50's and 60's. Kenny and I would be out from dawn to dusk playing ball and doing all the other activities kids did back then. He excelled in all sports and pushed us all to be the best that we could be. Many Three Sport Athletes came out of Enfield back then as they tried to follow in Kenny's footsteps. It was a difficult task for sure. I will never forget Kenny and me washing the walls at the family bakery to make a couple of bucks. I would be washing the walls and my buddy would be leaning on the ladder debating with me about who was a better ballplayer, Mickey Mantle or Willie Mays. I'll never forget the love Kenny had for his family, especially his kid brother, Augie. He was always there for Augie and was his biggest booster. There was nothing he would not have done for his brother. It is no surprise that Augie turned out to be so much like his big brother. I have enough memories of Kenny, surely to last a lifetime. I'm sure everybody who knew him could say the same. The large crowd who paid their last respects at his wake was evidence of the their love for the big guy. People from all walks of life came out to celebrate and share stories. Chuckles could be heard as people remembered his humorous side and hearty laugh. We all know of Kenny's achievements and reputation on the basketball court and baseball diamond, but I think Kenny would be most proud of the many people he guided by making them realize the importance of their lives. I'm sure you would agree the world needs more Kenny Gwozdzes to step forward and make a difference. We well all miss the big guy but lets remember his life and go out the try to emulate what he stood for. Rest in peace my friend. Thank you for your friendship. Charlie Ragno
