Obituary for Vernon L. "Vern" Tyson Sr.

Vernon “Vern” Lee Tyson Sr., 78, of Windsor, beloved husband of the late Ann E. (Heard) Tyson, died at his home on Tuesday, July 1, 2014. Born September 18, 1935 in Hartford, Vern was the sixth child of the late Edward and Nellie Tyson. Vern attended Hartford Schools, graduating from Hartford Public High School in 1955. He went on to proudly serve our country in the United States Air Force. He resided in Windsor most of his adult life with his loving wife Ann of forty-nine years. After being discharged from the Air Force, Vern became a proud member of the Hartford Fire Department from 1960-1992, when he retired with the distinction of Pump Operator. In his younger years, Vern was an avid hunter and fisherman, as well as a dedicated N.Y. Giants football fan. His most cherished accomplishment was his service to the City of Hartford as a Fireman. Vern leaves his loving family to cherish and respect his memory; a daughter, LeighAnn Tyson; a son and daughter-in-law, Vernon Lee and Deanna Tyson Jr., all of Windsor; a niece, Candice Heard (who he and his wife raised for many years), of Brooklyn, NY; his sister, Nellie Tyson of Bloomfield; four adored grandchildren, Kristal L. Tyson and her fiance’ George Martin, Nathan J. Tyson, Vernon L. Tyson III, and Joy E.A. Tyson; two cherished great grandchildren, Elicia and Harlynn Tyson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other much-loved friends and relatives, including friends and family in his wife’s hometown of Camp Hill, AL. In addition to his wife and parents, Vern was predeceased by his two brothers, William L. Tyson, Arthur E. Tyson; and two sisters, Vivian (Tyson) Dunkley, and Marilyn B. Tyson. The Tyson Family would like to thank Vern’s caregiver, Mr. Wesley Morgan, for his kind, loving, and caring service. Friends and relatives may pay their respects Wednesday, July 9, 2014 from 10-11am in the Union Baptist Church, 1921 Main St., Hartford, at which time A Celebration of Vern’s life will be held at 11am. Burial will follow in Mountain View Cemetery, 30 Mountain Ave., Bloomfield. Vern’s funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield. Memorial donations may be made in Vern’s name, to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2075 Silas Deane Hwy, Suite 100, Rocky Hill, CT 06067.
