The Reverend Thomas B.  Campion
The Reverend Thomas B. Campion, 89, of West Hartford, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, November 30, 2016, with his family by his side. Born September 12, 1927 in Hartford, he was the son of the late Thomas M. Campion DDS and Mary (Hanlon) Campion. Father’s interest in sports began at an early age. Just out of high school, where he was an incredible athlete, he participated in a baseball tryout camp and was offered an opportunity to sign with the St Louis Cardinals, Boston Braves and Brooklyn Dodgers organizations. After his graduating from St. Joseph’s Cathedral School in Hartford and St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, he attended St. John’s Seminary in Brighton, Mass., achieving a B.A. degree in Education. Father also obtained a Master’s Degree in Education from Fairfield University. St. Thomas the Apostle Church in West Hartford was the site of his ordination on December 27, 1952. Father Campion has served at St. Paul’s Church in West Haven and devoted 27 years of service at St. Thomas Seminary as a teacher and director of athletics, as well as the coach of the baseball and basketball teams. He then served at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Torrington and then was assigned as co-pastor of Corpus Christi Church, Wethersfield in 1983 as well as Sacred Heart Parish Wethersfield, when they were linked in 1995. Upon his retirement from Corpus Christi/Sacred Heart Churches, the Corpus Christi School Basketball Court was named after him. Father Campion played baseball in the Hartford Twilight League during his college years and continued as president of the league for many years after. He belonged to Wethersfield Country Club for many years, where he was a scratch golfer. He loved following sports and hearing about all his nieces and nephews accomplishments. Father Campion leaves his sister, Patricia Cobb and her husband Richard, brother in law John Anthony O’Neil, as well as 23 nieces and nephews, more than 40 great nieces and great nephews and 10 great-great nieces and great-great nephews. In addition to his parents, Father Campion was predeceased by his sisters and brothers in law; Mary Sinatro and her husband James, Kathleen O’Neil and Elizabeth Trenchard and her husband Ken. Father Campion will be remembered by all the seminarians and parish families he served during his 60 years of devotion to the Lord and his brothers and sisters in Christ. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, December 6, 2016 at 11am, in the Chapel of Saint Thomas Seminary, 467 Bloomfield Ave., Bloomfield by The Most Reverend Leonard Blair, Archbishop of Hartford. Father Campion will lie in state prior to the Mass from 9:30 - 10:45 a.m. Interment will follow in the Campion family plot in Fairview Cemetery (Section 12), 200 Whitman Ave., West Hartford. Memorial donations may be made in Father Campion’s name to Corpus Christi Church or School, 84 Somerset St., Wethersfield, CT 06109.
