Obituary for Fr. David W. Lonergan

Fr. David W.  Lonergan
The Reverend David W. Lonergan passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, December 20, 2014, surrounded by his loving family and dear friends. Father Lonergan was born on March 6, 1935 in Waterbury, a son of John and Ellen (O’Connell) Lonergan. He graduated from Sacred Heart High School, St. Thomas Seminary, St. Bernard’s Seminary and the American College in Louvain, Belgium. Father Lonergan was ordained at Louvain in 1961 and served many parishes including St. Mary’s in Unionville, St. Pius X in Wolcott, St. Anthony’s in Prospect and Corpus Christi in Wethersfield. At Corpus Christi, he also administered one of the largest Catholic elementary schools in the state. Additionally, Father was a chaplain at both the University of Hartford and Trinity College. Father Dave was an accomplished pitcher at St. Thomas Seminary and in Waterbury semi-professional leagues, at times competing against future major leaguers. He was an excellent golfer and basketball player. He enjoyed pickup games with the eighth graders at Corpus Christi well into his seventies. Most of all, Father Dave was a source of great comfort to his family, dear friends and the countless people he served. He will be missed dearly. Father Lonergan’s body will lie in state on Saturday, December 27, 2014 in Corpus Christi Church, 601 Silas Deane Highway, Wethersfield, from 9 A.M. – 10:30 A.M. with a Mass of Christian Burial to be celebrated at 11 A.M. by the Most Reverend Peter A. Rosazza D.D., Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of Hartford. Internment will take place at a later date in St. Joseph Cemetery (New), 49 Hamilton Avenue, Waterbury.
