He was "Chucker Reilly" when my Dad and I watched him play Little League baseball at Highland Park. Later, our family, including my grandmother, followed Gene and his basketball team to the New England championships in the Boston Garden. Rindge Tech was a favorite opponent there. Gene played out more of his magic at Central Connecticut. One game I remember in the old field house was against an all-black university. They were giving us a pretty good beating in the first half. Coach Detrick told Gene, a guard, to post up his smaller guard in the second half and use some "French pastry" on him. Gene scored something like 22 free throws in a row and we won that game. Wow! What a thrill that was!
My condolences to Margaret and the rest of the family. I have always admired Gene as an athlete and coach and am sorry to learn of his death. I enjoyed watching Gene play and sometimes chauffering him home after a game at CCSC. He was an exciting player and good guy!
