Walter E. Shea
Shea, Sr., Walter Edward, age 79 Ocala - Walter Shea, "Tiny", "Millennium Man", passed away February 19, 2015. He was an amazing husband, dad, and grandfather. Walter leaves his faithful wife of 51 years, Jacqueline (Supple) Shea, and four adoring children: Deborah (Tom) Turkington, Kathleen Shea, Walter Shea, Jr. (Liz Abbott) and Suzanne Shea who all reside in CT. He also leaves his six beautiful grandchildren, Michelle Turkington, Matthew Turkington, Jonathan Shea, Thomas Shea, Michael Shea and Kara Shea as well as his sister Janet (Derm) Rea of Durham, CT, many nieces and nephews and his loyal and best buddy, his dog Cleo. Born in Hartford, CT, Walt was raised in Wethersfield and West Hartford where he graduated from Hall High School in 1954. He captained the 1953 Hall High football team. He graduated from Dartmouth College in 1958 and served with the U.S. Army Counter Intelligence Corps in West Berlin, Germany. Walter joined Travelers Insurance Company in 1960 where he was an underwriting official until 1971 when he joined the Administration and Customer Services Division of Life, Health and Financial Services. He was appointed Vice President and Division Head in 1979. He also was a Fellow in the Life Management Institute. Walt served as department head for Agency Marketing Group's Human Resource Department from 1986 to 1989. From 1989 to 1990 he served as head of Agency Operations Service Support for over 40 Personal Lines and Commercial Lines Service Centers throughout the U.S. Walt served on the South Regional YMCA Board of Managers. He coached Midget Football and Youth Basketball in town leagues and was a Wethersfield Little League Umpire, which led to umpiring the State Little League Finals. He served many years on the Board of Directors for the Greater Hartford Chapter of the American Red Cross in Farmington, CT where he was on the Building Committee and served as Chairman of the Finance Committee. Governor O'Neill appointed him to serve on the Council to administer the Children's Trust Fund in 1985. Walt was a 1980 alumnus of the Executive Program at Columbia Graduate School of Business Administration in Harriman, NY. Walt and Jackie moved to Dataw Island, South Carolina in 1998 and to Ocala, Florida in 2003 where they enjoyed warm weather and golf. Walt made friends with everyone he met and his thoughtfulness and humor will never be forgotten. His last message was "Enjoy life, respect others, and I'll see you later." Or, as he said to his children every night for many years, "Until we meet again!" Memorial donations may be made to Dartmouth College, in Hanover, NH, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or the Wounded Warrior Project.
