Shirley Pierce McAuliffe Skelly, 87, of Wethersfield wife of the late John S. Skelly died Monday, April 2, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. Born in Hartford on July 26, 1924 to the late Anna (Leary) and Leslie Pierce, she lived there before moving to Wethersfield in 1951. She graduated from Mount Saint Joseph Academy, Class of 1942. She was employed by the State Adjunct General during WWII. Shirley became a Real Estate Agent in 1960 and was associated with several agencies including Barrows, Graber, Merrill Lynch and Prudential before retiring in 2001. She was active in the “Mount” Alumni Association, Elm Tree Women’s Club, Wethersfield Historical Society and many civic and church activities. She loved playing bridge, bowling and tennis. Family was very important to Shirley and she spent many hours at ball fields, recitals and concerts. You were always welcomed to sit by the pool or the kitchen table for a sandwich or cup of tea. She leaves one son and three daughters, Daniel “Skip” McAuliffe and his wife Mary of Cambridge, MD; Mary Ellen Rund and her husband Thomas of Rocky Hill; Susan McAuliffe Curnias and her husband James; and Carol Moore and her husband Stephen all of Wethersfield. She was the proud Grandmother of seven grandchildren, Daniel J. McAuliffe III; Amy Rund Grigas and her husband Shane, Thomas Jr. and Kevin Rund, Katherine and Maureen Moore and Christina Curnias and great grandchildren Lauren and Anthony Grigas. She leaves one sister and two brothers, Jane Dowling of West Hartford; John Zazzaro and his wife Marianna of Avon; and Paul Zazzaro of Hartford. She also leaves sisters-in-law, Rita Hennessey and Mary Anne Skelly of Wethersfield; and brother-in-law, Roger Skelly and his wife Billie of Mansfield Center and many special nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband and parents, Shirley was predeceased by her first husband Daniel J. McAuliffe, a brother James Pierce, sisters Anne Zazzaro and Nancy Driscoll, and her “special” father Paul A. Zazzaro. Shirley’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude, appreciation and thanks to all the staff at The Atrium of Rocky Hill for their kind and compassionate care. Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 9th at 9am from the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in The Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect St., Wethersfield. Burial will follow in Village Cemetery, Wethersfield. Friends and relatives may call at the funeral home on Sunday April 8, from 4 to 8pm.
