It is with deepest regret that we say goodbye to our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend Sheila Sharkey Glynn. Sheila was born in County Dublin Ireland and was one of eight children born to parents John Sharkey and Margaret Doherty Sharkey. The family relocated to Miltown Malbay, County Clare after Sheila’s father was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident. Sheila immigrated to the U.S. in 1947, settled in the south end of Hartford and worked at Connecticut General Life Insurance Co. An excellent camogie (field hockey) player in her native Ireland, she was automatically affiliated with The Gaelic Leagues’ camogie team in New York and helped to initiate the formation of a team at the Irish American Home in Hartford. Sheila has been an active member of the Irish American Home Society (now located in Glastonbury) since 1949, serving on numerous committees. She also volunteered her efforts for the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committees in Hartford and Wethersfield. She was the 1992 Person of the Year and the 2010 Town Marshal for the Town of Wethersfield’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Sheila was a past member of the Comhaltas Ceoltori Eirann and a past member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. Sheila was most proud of her membership in the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association and just recently received a pin from the organization in honor of her lifelong commitment. Sheila married Pat, her husband of 62 years at St. Augustine Church in Hartford. She was actively involved in the St. Augustine Home and School Association, The Girls’ Brigade, and The Rosary Society. She was selected to represent the Irish Community of Hartford for the then Mayor Athanson’s “All American Counsel”. Sheila became a member of The Church of the Incarnation parish after moving to Wethersfield in 1976. She is a member of the Church choir, The Women’s Club, The Honor Guard and The Church and Coffee Club. Sheila was also asked to represent the Irish Community of Wethersfield during the Town of Wethersfield’s 350th Anniversary. Sheila is survived by her beloved husband Patrick Glynn of Wethersfield; her son Dennis Glynn and wife Sarah Lynn, of Middletown; daughter Sheila Privitera and her husband Peter, of Rocky Hill; son Patrick and wife Debra, of Wethersfield; daughter Erin Glynn of North Quincy, MA; her grandchildren, Megan and Matthew Glynn, Paul and Ryan Privitera, and Kaitlin Glynn, Jennifer Bryant, and Christopher Vicevich. She is also survived by her sisters Kitty Tierney of London, England, Nancy Huntley of Middlesex, England, and Nellie Sharkey of Miltown Malbay, Co. Clare, Ireland. She was predeceased by her brothers Eddie and Danny Sharkey, both of England, William Sharkey of Hartford, and a sister Susie of Ireland. She also leaves behind many nieces and nephews here and abroad; and numerous friends who will remember Sheila’s enduring faith and kindness. Sheila’s family will receive relatives and friends on Thursday, October 4, 2012 from 4 to 7pm at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Sheila’s life will be held Friday, October 5, 2012 at 1pm in the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect St., Wethersfield, (Attendees are asked to go directly to the Church). Interment will follow in Village Cemetery, Marsh St., Old Wethersfield. To extend online condolences or for further information, please visit farleysullivan.com.
