Peggy “Peg” (Ayers) Choquette, 93, of East Hartford, beloved wife for 66 years to the late Len R. Choquette peacefully passed away at her home with her family at her side on Sunday, July 08, 2012 after an extended illness. Born in Portsmouth, England on December 3, 1918, she was the youngest daughter of six children born to the late William and Ellen Ayres. She met and married her American paratrooper husband Len in England during World War II. She was in the Women’s Royal Naval Service and reached the rank of Petty Officer and endured several Nazi bombings of Portsmouth Harbor and London during the war. She was a member of the Portsmouth Sailing Club and was the first woman to win the club’s Kimber Cup sailing race around the Isle of Wight. Peg was a voracious reader and a knowledgeable fan of many sports. She particularly loved the old Hartford Whaler Hockey team and the New York Yankees. She loved visits to the seashore and spending time with her children and grandchildren and loved nothing better than family gatherings with lots of laughter. She was a very warm and gentle person who greeted everyone with a big smile and words of kindness. She was regularly proclaimed the “best mom ever” by her sons and grandchildren. In addition to raising four energetic boys, she worked for many years as a medical claims representative with the Travelers Insurance Company before retirement. Peg is survived by her devoted children, John Choquette and his wife Marti, of Glastonbury, Greg Choquette and his wife Ann-Marie, of East Hartford, Bill Choquette and his wife Judy, of Glastonbury, Mike Choquette and his wife Sue, of East Hartford; seven grandchildren, John, David, Stephen, Craig, Brian, Mark, Michele; four great grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. The family especially appreciates the wonderful care provided to Peg by Selma Paul and Patsy Thibodeau in support of the family’s efforts to keep Peg in the comfort of her own home during her long illness. At Peg’s request, the family will celebrate her life during a private memorial and burial service. There are no calling hours.
