Nancy (Collins) Mahoney, widow of the late Borden V. Mahoney, passed away on September 16, 2012, surrounded by her loving family. She was born on September 9, 1918 in Hartford, daughter of the late Richard Collins and Annie (McCormick) Collins. She was a graduate of Bulkeley High School, Class of 1936B, and Teacher’s College, now Central Connecticut State University, Class of 1940. She began her teaching career in Bakersville, Ct, where she taught for a year in a two-room schoolhouse, with no plumbing and only a wood-burning stove for heat. Nancy went on to teach in the Hartford school system, where she taught 3rd, 5th and 6th grade at McDonough School for 35 years. By her own account, she never had a student that she didn’t like and enjoy, and many of her students, as adults, continued to come and visit her throughout her life. Her lifetime love of learning led to earning a master’s and sixth year degrees from the University of Hartford. She married Borden V. Mahoney in 1945 lived in Hartford and raised her family there until moving to Wethersfield to reside with her daughter in her later years. Nancy was an exceptionally kind and loving person and lived life with great joy and enthusiasm. She never spoke ill of others and always sought and appreciated the goodness found in everyone she met. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. She was a greatly loved woman and loved greatly in return. Nancy leaves to cherish her memory her son Vincent R. Mahoney and his wife Gemma of West Hartford, her daughter Mary-Anne (Mahoney) Sullivan and her husband Robert of Wethersfield and her son Atty. Richard C. Mahoney and his wife Ann also of Wethersfield. She also leaves eight grand children and a special great-grandson, all of whom she loved dearly: Katie Mahoney, Meghan Mahoney Cancellieri and her husband Anthony, Maura Sullivan, Robert M. Sullivan, Michael Sullivan, Richard C. Mahoney, Jr., Mary-Margaret Mahoney, Patrick J. Mahoney and Devin Mahoney. Nancy is also survived by her two sisters, Mrs. Nora Elizabeth Pickering of West Hartford and Mrs. Catherine Vaughan of Wethersfield and by her lifelong dear friend and sister, Ms. Mary “Pat” Priola. She was predeceased by her sisters, Louise Collins and Mary Erbal. Nancy was also survived by many nieces and nephews with whom she shared much happiness and of whom she was very proud. The family would like to thank her companions of 5 years, Ms. Jeanette Leblanc and Ms. Michelle Fauteau for the joy and care they brought to her life. The family is eternally grateful to the staff of Jefferson House, Hitchcock Wing for the compassionate, skilled and loving care they provided Nancy during the last 18 months of her life. The funeral will be held Thursday September 20, 2012 at 10:30 am from the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd Wethersfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:15am in the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect St, Wethersfield. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery 453 Fairfield Ave, Hartford. Friends may call at the funeral home from 4-7 pm Wednesday September 19.
