Obituary for Mildred Scanlon (Leigner)

Mildred Leigner Irwin Scanlon, 87, beloved wife of the late Donald S. Irwin, who she missed very much; resident of First Church Village, Wethersfield, passed away peacefully, Saturday, March 1, 2014 at Ellis Manor, Hartford. She was born in Jindice, Czechoslovakia, December 6, 1926, daughter of the late Louis and Louise (Podhajska) Leigner. Mildred was employed at Vernon Center Middle School as well as Travelers Insurance Company, from where she retired. Her favorite pass times included gardening, knitting and crocheting, in addition she was an avid reader. Mildred will be fondly remembered and dearly missed by her loving family; her five daughters, Marce Heald (Joseph), Cathy-Anne Manning, Diane Holden (Richard), Susan Taylor (Bruce) and Louise “Lisa” Moreau (Randy); fourteen adored grandchildren, Robert, Douglas, William “Billy”, and Marc MacDonald, Sarah Helsley, Skip and Joseph Wood, Sharon Routhier, Rachel Lucia, Patti-Lu Ouimette, Carole Lin Moreau, Lance Moreau, Melissa Petruzielo (Kevin), and Jessica Taylor and her fiancé, James Burke; many cherished great-grandchildren; a niece, Susan Paluzzi; two nephews, Wayne Irwin, Ronald Laigner, and their families; as well as a special great niece, Laura Irwin; and special friends, James and Patty Haefs. In addition to her husband and parents, Mildred was predeceased by her brother Frank Laigner, a grandson Stephen J. Symons, and a very special friend Dorothy Haefs.
Mildred’s family will receive friends and relatives at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield, Saturday, March 8, 2014 from 11am – 1pm, at which time a memorial service celebrating her life will be held in the funeral home, with Rev. Larry Fair officiating. Interment will follow the service in Grove Hill Cemetery, Cemetery Rd., Rockville Section of Vernon. Mildred’s family requests in lieu of flowers, to please give the people in your life a special hug today, and to make a donation in Mildred’s name, to a charity of your choice.
