Obituary for Michael G. "Mike" Putio

Michael G. Putio, 91, of Wethersfield died peacefully on February 20, 2016, at Hartford Hospital. Born in Ukraine on February 28, 1924, he was the son of Ilko and Katerina Putio. Mike will be remembered as a deeply loving husband, father and father-in-law and a proud grandfather. He was married for 33 years to Shirley (Bloom) Putio, who died in 1993. He is survived by daughters Theresa Harris (Gene) of South Portland, Maine, Ann Putio (Jay Spiegel) of Woodbridge and Patty Reid (Tom) of Enfield, and grandchildren Zoe Harris, Emma Spiegel, Shane Reid and Brittany Reid. He also leaves sisters Anna and Parashka in Ukraine and his niece Cathy, who was like another daughter to him, and the Zastawsky family. He was predeceased by his brother Ivan and sister Mary. A special thanks to caring neighbors Frank and Maria Figueiredo, and Margaret Valente. He will also be missed by his devoted little dog Max, who was always by his side. Mike lived the American dream. He arrived in Connecticut after spending four years in a labor camp in Germany during World War II. Mike embraced American citizenship while never forgetting the family he was forced to leave behind in Ukraine. He found lifelong community, faith and friendship within St. Michael’s Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Ukrainian National Home in Hartford. Mike was a skilled sheet metal worker and master craftsman with copper who worked on many of Hartford’s notable buildings. He was a member of the national and local Sheet Metal Workers union. With his easy smile and twinkling blue eyes, Mike made friends wherever he went. He most recently enjoyed assisting with bingo at the Ukrainian National Home. He shared his great enjoyment of gardening with all, starting vegetables and flowers from seed and planting gardens even in the last year of his life. He showed kindness to everyone, always a hug, a smile and a kiss; friendship and love are the legacy of our dearest Mike. Friends may pay their respects to the Putio family at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd. Wethersfield from 4:00 – 7:00 pm Wednesday, February 24, 2016, with a Panachyda service at 6:45 pm. The funeral will be held at 10:15 am Thursday, February 25, 2016 from the funeral home followed by a Funeral Liturgy at 11:00 am in St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Church. Burial will be in St. Michael Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery, New London Turnpike, Glastonbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Ukrainian National Home, 961 Wethersfield Ave., Hartford, CT 06114.
