Marilyn Elizabeth (Miller) Whalen, 85 of Wethersfield, wife of the late Thomas Gregory Whalen, passed away peacefully on Saturday (March 23, 2013) at Avery Heights with her loving family by her side. Born on July 6, 1927 in Hartford, she was the daughter of the late John Benjamin and Mary Elizabeth (Becker) Miller. Tom would laugh and say she was a late firecracker. Marilyn was a proud graduate of ‘The Mount’, St. Joseph Academy in West Hartford. She began her career, working at the Aetna Life and Casualty, quickly rising in the ranks. That is where she met Tom and destiny stepped in. They soon married and began a family. Marilyn devoted herself to rearing a family and being active in PTO, school activities and maintaining a home. Once all the children were in school, she rejoined the workforce. She first began working for the ‘old’ G. Fox & Company, in the Pharmacy and Liquor departments. Years later she moved to Hartford National Bank and later Society for Savings. She always prided herself on knowing all her customers and balancing her money drawer to the penny. Marilyn was always behind the scene helping, whether it was Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, school athletics, Corpus Christi church activities or political elections. Her passion for sports was just as great as Toms’, with special love for the UCONN Men’s and Women’s Basketball teams. Marilyn is predeceased by a daughter, Mary Jean. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving family, her daughter, Barbara Anne Whalen-Mulvey of Hartford and her long-time companion, Jack Wrang, sons, Thomas and his wife, Suzanne (Bunny) of Meriden and John and his wife, Judith of Rocky Hill. She will be missed by her granddaughter, Erin Rodriguez and her husband, Elias and her grandsons, Jonathan and Benjamin Whalen. Her great-grandchildren, Scarlett and Wyatt Rodriguez will miss her love and support that she always gave. Marilyn is also survived by her devoted brother, John Miller and his wife, Anita, her brother-in-law, Paul Whalen and his wife, Pauline, and her sister-in-law, Karen Whalen. She leaves many nieces and nephews that she loved and loved her. The family would like to extend their gratitude to the Avery Heights Station 1 staff that took Marilyn in as their family member for over the 3 ½ years that Marilyn resided there and supported and comforted her during her residence there. Funeral services will be Wednesday, March 27th, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. from the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield, CT, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at 11:30 a.m. in Corpus Christi Church, 601 Silas Deane Hwy, Wethersfield, CT. Burial will be held in Rose Hill Memorial Park, 580 Elm Street, Rocky Hill, CT. Family and friends are invited to call at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home from 10:00 a.m to 11:00 a.m Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Marilyn’s memory to The Connecticut Children’s Medical Center, 282 Washington Street, Hartford, CT 06106 or The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, Grand Central Station, PO Box 4777, New York, NY, 10163-4777. May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind always be at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face, and rains fall soft upon your fields. And until we meet again, May God hold you in the palm of His hand.
