Margaret “ Peg” (Lucey) Griffin passed away peacefully in her sleep Sunday, October 30, 2011 at home in Wethersfield where she had lived for 48 years. She was born in Glenflesk, County Kerry, Ireland on April 12, 1930 and emigrated to America in May 1953. She left from Cobh in County Cork aboard the Mauritania of the Cunard line and was met in New York by her cousins The Reverend John P. Lucey and Reverend Paul Lucey of Worcester MA. She trained as an X Ray Technician at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford where where she worked until she had children. On October 19, 1957 she married John “Jack” P. Griffin, Jr. who predeceased her in 2009. Peg was delighted with America, beginning with the 28 flavors of ice cream at the Howard Johnson's they stopped at on the way back to Worcester and including the comfort and convenience of her own car and central heat. She returned to Ireland many times over the years to visit her three sisters and many nieces, nephews and friends most recently in May 2010 when she stayed with her sister Eileen O’Donaghue in her childhood home. She also had many good friends in Wethersfield and in the local Irish American community. Peg’s proudest accomplishment was raising her three children, Joan Griffin of Dublin, NH, Patrick Griffin of Wethersfield and Maureen Griffin Jean of Westborough, MA, with whom she enjoyed spending time, along with their spouses, John Morris, Eileen Candles and Brian Jean, her four adoring grandchildren, Kate and Anna Griffin, Lucey and Brendan Jean, as well as her sisters in law, and all her nieces and nephews in the Hartford area. Relatives and friends may call on the family Wednesday, November 9, 2011 from 4-7pm at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield. Funeral procession from Farley-Sullivan will be Thursday, November 10, at 9:00am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Peg’s life at 10am in the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect St., Wethersfield, with Fr. James Moran officiating. Interment will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park (Section 31), 580 Elm St., Rocky Hill. The family requests in lieu of flowers that memorial donations be made in Peg’s name to the Samuel B. Webb Elementary School Playscape Fund, 51 Willow Street, Wethersfield, Connecticut 06109 .
