Katherine M. Hynes, centenarian, and lifelong Hartford area resident, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, September 18, 2013 at St. Mary Home, West Hartford. Born November 10, 1912, and raised in Hartford, a city she loved, she was the daughter of the late Francis A. “Frank” and Florence (Holehouse) Horan. Katherine attended Immaculate Conception School, and then went on to graduate from Bulkeley High School. She continued her education at the Miss Marchant Secretarial School. Prior to her retirement in 1957, Katherine was employed by the City of Hartford for 37 years. At this time, she went on to work for 7 years in the Business Office of St. Francis Hospital. She was a long time member and past President of the LaSalette Mission Guild. For many years, Katherine worked with Father Loughlin at the St. Benedict Center in the North End of Hartford. Katherine will be fondly remembered by her sister, Florence Fondis of Arizona; a niece, Patricia Wilson; two grandnephews, Edmond and Michael Geysen; cousins, Sister Jean Holehouse of the Sisters of Mercy, and Mrs. Jane Reale of North Carolina; in addition to many close and dear friends. Katherine was predeceased by her birth father, Daniel Hynes, when she was 6 months old, and her two brothers, George and Francis Horan. Relatives and friends may pay their respects to Katherine on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 from 1-2pm in the family visitation room at St. Mary Home, 2021 Albany Ave., West Hartford. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Katherine’s life will be at 2pm in St. Mary Home Chapel. Interment will follow the Mass in the family plot in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery (Section T), 1 Cottage Grove Rd., Bloomfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Katherine’s name to the Sisters of Mercy Retirement Fund, 55 East Cedar St., Newington, CT 06111. Katherine’s funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield, CT 06109.
