Joseph B. Sweeney, “Pops”, 78, of West Hartford and Black Point Beach, Niantic, beloved husband of Norma (Heslin) Sweeney for 52 blessed years, passed away Saturday November 29, 2008, at St. Francis Hospital surrounded by his loving family. Born November 14, 1930, to Thomas and Catherine Byrne Sweeney and raised in the Frog Hollow section of Hartford. Joseph was an altar boy and a graduate of the Immaculate Conception School and Hartford High School. He served with the Air Force 103rd Fighter Wing during the Korean War. He was proud Founder and President of Sweeney Electrical Contractors for over 50 years. He was a Director and Past-President of the Independent Electrical Contractors of New England; a member of the International Association of Electrical Inspectors; and served on the State Building Industry Council. Joseph was a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a life-time member of the Ancient Order of the Hibernians, and an Honored member of the Irish American Home Society. He served on the West Hartford Democratic Town Committee and was the former Chairman of the Black Point Beach Zoning Board of Appeals. A fine “Irish gentleman” of strong Catholic faith, he was a communicant and past-trustee of St. Mark the Evangelist Church. Besides his devoted wife, he is survived by his loving children; Stephen and Alaina Sweeney, Shevon and Thomas Hickey, Sharon and Charles Bruce, and his dear grandchildren, Shauna, Nicolette and Joseph Austin Sweeney, Garrett Hickey, Liam, Fintan and Griffin Bruce who relished being with him at the beach and eating his special French toast. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia, her husband Bernard Coughlin, of Middle Haddam, sister-in-law, Mary Deveneau Sweeney of Wethersfield, his 44 wonderful nieces, nephews, and their spouses. His “Irish Charm” made him adored and admired by everyone he met; he truly enjoyed people! He loved to travel and spend time with his family. Joseph was everything you could wish for! He was sadly predeceased by his grandson, Thomas Hickey III; and his siblings, Katherine Crowley, Mary Hawley, Margaret McCarthy, Thomas Sweeney, Helen Gleason, James Martin Sweeney, Rita Coughlin, Eugene Sweeney, and Winifred Flannery. Joseph’s family extends their gratitude to Dr. Richard Edwards and the St. Francis Oncology Nursing Staff.
