John F. “Sam” Sampson Sr., 72, of Wethersfield, beloved husband of 47 years to Gail (Lamoureux) Sampson, passed away Saturday, August 20, 2011 at St. Francis Hospital with his family by his side. Born August 31, 1938, and raised in Hartford, he was a son of the late George I. Sr. and Frances (Dettenborn) Sampson. John was a graduate of Bulkeley High School, and served in the Army National Guard from 1959-1966. He was co-owner of Insurance City Offset on Wethersfield Ave. Hartford for 25 years prior to being employed as a bus operator for CT Transit, retiring in 2007. John was a lifelong member of the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge 723, along with being an avid Boston Red Sox and New York Giants fan. He was loved by many people and will be dearly missed. In addition to his wife Gail, John is survived by his son, John F. Sampson Jr. of Glastonbury; daughter Catherine “Cathy” Sampson of Wethersfield; three brothers George I. Sampson Jr. and his wife Carol, of Wethersfield, Walter Sampson of Hartford, Richard Sampson of Wethersfield; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Arlene & Gene Belcher of East Hartford, Joan & Edward Gilligan of Wethersfield, Priscilla Sampson of Hartford, Lois & Dennis Deangelis of Glastonbury; two sisters-in-law, Nancy Sampson of Westbrook, and Terry Anselmo and her husband Ralph of West Hartford; two grandchildren, John F. Sampson III (JT), and Caitlyn Sampson both of Newington, along with their mother, Cindy Sampson; several nieces and nephews, extended family, and many dear friends. In addition to his parents, John was predeceased by a brother David Sampson, and a sister-in-law, Cynthia Sampson. The Sampson family would like to thank the ICU staff at St. Francis, for their kindness in John's final hours. The family will receive relatives and friends Thursday, August 25, 2011 from 5-8 pm at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield. Funeral services celebrating John’s life will be Friday, August 26, 2011 at 10am at Farley-Sullivan. Interment will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery 453 Fairfield Ave., Hartford. Memorial donations may be made in John’s name to the American Cancer Society, 825 Brook St., I-91 Tech Center, Rocky Hill, CT 06067, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
