Evelyn Fennelly Moriarty, wife of the late Eugene F. “Moe” Moriarty of Rocky Hill, died Thursday April 18 at The Villages Regional Hospital, The Villages, FL, surrounded by her family. Born in Hartford’s Northend, the daughter of John and Nelly (Kenny) Fennelly, she was a graduate of St. Michael’s School and Weaver High School. During the early years of her marriage, she was employed by the Aetna Fire Insurance Company. While raising her children, she worked as a paraprofessional in the Rocky Hill Public Schools and later found a career with the State of Connecticut’s Division of Special Revenue. In her retirement, she volunteered with both VNA Hospice and the Sisters of Mercy. Proud of her Irish heritage, some of her happiest times were spent with Moe, traveling around and visiting family in Ireland. A life member and former officer of the Irish American Home Society, she was also a member and former chair of the Rocky Hill St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee. Ev was honored for her service to Central Connecticut’s Irish American Community as: Rocky Hill Town Marshal, Deputy Marshal, and as the 2009 Parade Grand Marshal for the Greater Hartford St. Patrick’s Day Parade. A parishioner of St. Elizabeth Seton Church since its inception, she served there as a Eucharistic Minister. Ev was an avid UCONN women’s basketball fan and season ticketholder, who followed “her girls” to seven Final Four Championships. She leaves her children: Thomas Moriarty and his wife Suzanne of Valencia, CA, James Moriarty and his wife Margaret of Rocky Hill, Mayor Timothy Moriarty of Rocky Hill, William Moriarty of Cromwell, and Sr. Patty Moriarty, RSM of Middletown; her grandchildren: Brendan, Patrick, Sean, Timothy and Kelsey Moriarty; her brother: Edward Fennelly of East Hartford; a brother-in-law: Walter Moriarty; sisters-in-law: Betty Fennelly and Peg Moriarty; several nieces and nephews including a special nephew, Robert Fennelly; many cousins including those in Stradbally, County Laois, Ireland; a dear friend, Annette White; and her four-legged companion Ceili. She was predeceased by her brothers: James, John “Jack,” and George Fennelly. Ev’s family extends their gratitude to Joe and Ellen Utter and Rick and Lori Flynn for their kindness and support. The funeral will be held Thursday April 24 at 9:00 am from the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd. Wethersfield followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am in St. Elizabeth Seton Church 280 Brook St. Rocky Hill. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Memorial Park, Rocky Hill. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 3-8 PM. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sisters of Mercy Ministry Fund, 55 East Cedar St. Newington, 06111.
