Ethel M.  Whitmore (Topliff)
Ethel M. (Topliff) Whitmore, 86, of Manchester, beloved wife of 63 years to Richard J. Whitmore, passed away peacefully Friday, February 26, 2016 at St. Francis Hospital. Ethel was born June 23, 1929 in Manchester, the daughter of the late James Topliff and the late Helen (Sullivan) Ellis and Alan Ellis. Ethel attended school in Manchester CT. She was a member of the Loyal order of Moose Club, the Phillips Maine Senior Citizen Club, and the Reeds Mill Ladies Sewing Circle, whose beautiful handmade quilts were often donated to those in need. For many years she enjoyed painting, especially theorems, where some of her work was displayed at the University of Connecticut. Ethel and her husband Dick loved vacationing at their home in Madrid Maine, where she enjoyed her beautiful wildflower gardens. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Above all her greatest joy was spending time with her family. In addition to her loving husband, she leaves her daughters and son in law, Teresa (Whitmore) Yester and her husband Norman of Old Lyme, Elissa (Whitmore) McKenzie of Vernon, grandchildren Brendan W. Yester and his wife Christina of Manchester, Timothy N. Yester of Old Lyme, Curran M. McKenzie of Cromwell, Andrew R. McKenzie of Vernon, and her great grandson Brendan W. Yester Jr. of Manchester. Ethel also leaves her sister, Eleanor Willson of East Hartford, and a special niece, Rita Willson of Manchester, a dear friend Beverly Toothacher of Portland Maine, as well as several nieces and nephews. Ethel will be greatly missed by her beloved dog, Shadow. She was preceded by her brother, James (Buddy) Topliff. Friends and relatives may pay their respects to the family on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 from 10 to 11am at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd. Wethersfield. A mass of Christian burial celebrating Ethel's life will follow at 12 noon at St. Bartholomew's Church, 736 Middle Turnpike East, Manchester CT. Internment will follow at St. James cemetery, Broad St. Manchester. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
