Obituary for Elizabeth M. Leahy (Murphy)

Elizabeth (Murphy) Leahy, of Hartford and West Hartford, beloved wife of 59 years to Michael H. Leahy, passed away peacefully Saturday, August 8, 2015 at St. Mary’s Home, West Hartford. Her husband, Michael, was with her at the time of her passing. She was born in the village of Sneem, County Kerry, Ireland to the late Michael and Helen (Curran) Murphy. She left her native Ireland in 1948 and after a short stint in Boston; she spent the remainder of her life living in Hartford and West Hartford. She had lived at Saint Mary’s Home since 2006. Along with her husband Michael, Elizabeth will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by her four children; Mary Ellen Leahy and her husband Tim of Escondido, CA, Michael Leahy and his wife, Lee of Boston, MA, John Leahy and his wife, Susan and James Leahy and his wife Julie, all of Marlborough; her six cherished six grandchildren, Sean Sandy, Erin Sandy, Taylor Leahy, Cole Leahy, Caitlyn Leahy and Emily Leahy. In addition to her parents, Elizabeth was predeceased by her seven siblings, Michael Murphy, John Peter Murphy, Patrick Murphy, Helen Murphy, Bridie Murphy, Monica Murphy and Sheila (Murphy) Sullivan. Elizabeth had a gentle nature and a deep love of children and devoted her career to caring for and teaching them. She worked for over 25 years as a teacher’s aide in the Hartford Public School system where she taught and nurtured hundreds of kindergarten and first grade students at the Mark Twain School. She was known by all who met her for her kind and warm manner. She possessed a great sense of humor and a wonderful smile. She was a very devout Catholic to which her daily routine included Mass and prayer. Her husband, Michael, remained her closest friend and after nearly 60 years of marriage it was touching to see their interaction and devotion in her final years. Calling hours will be TODAY, Monday, August 10, from 5-7 pm at the Farley Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday morning at 10am in St. Mark the Evangelist Church, 467 South Quaker Lane, West Hartford. Interment will follow the Mass in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery, 1 Cottage Grove Rd., Bloomfield.
