Obituary

Edward M. Pierce, 69, beloved husband to Kathleen (Haggerty) Pierce, of Glastonbury, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 28, 2020 at Hartford Hospital. He was born on February 25, 1951 in Worcester, Massachusetts to the late Thomas J. and Frances (Coggins) Pierce. Ed was always known for his strong work ethic. He loved working as a Nurse Anesthetist at Saint Francis Hospital, but besides his love for the work he did, he loved his work family and playing pranks on them. He loved to travel all over but especially to Saint John and Florida. An avid reader and sports fan, Ed could always be found reading the Hartford Courant and the Boston Globe papers and cheering on his beloved Red Sox and Patriots. Ed was a devout Catholic and a weekly communicant at Saint Paul Church of SS Isidore and Maria Parish, in Glastonbury. However, Ed was a true family man and was best known for being a great husband, father and grandfather.
Besides his wife Kathleen, Ed leaves behind his three daughters, Maureen Pierce and her fiancé, James Dupell, Eileen Coniry and her husband, Dave and Colleen Brown and her husband, Jeremy, his grandchildren, Aoife Coniry, Seamus Coniry, Maeve Brown and Fallyn Brown, a brother, Thomas Pierce and many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews. Ed also leaves behind his Brothers-in-law, James Haggerty and his wife Joanne, Chuck Haggerty and his wife Kattie Chen and Tom Haggerty.
Friends and relatives may call on Thursday, September 3, 2020 from 4:00 to 7:00 PM at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 50 Naubuc Ave. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Ed’s life will be held on Friday, September 4, 2020 at 11:00AM in Saint Paul of SS Isidore and Maria Parish, 2577 Main Street, Glastonbury. All attendees are asked to go directly to church. Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family. Memorial Donations may be made to the American Liver Foundation, Connecticut, 127 Washington Avenue, #9, North Haven, CT 06473. To leave a condolence, please visit FarleySullivan.com

I am dismayed that the Corona virus prevents many of us from seeing Ed a final time and gathering together with family and friends. My cousin Eddy and I enjoyed many celebrations that brought our families together, sprinkled often by his trademark mischief. He was a kind and pleasant man who truly cared about what was going on in the lives of his family and friends. He was dedicated to taking care of the health of others and it was hard to see him struggle with his own health issues. Now, may you rest in peace, dear Eddy. My condolences to Kathy, his daughters—Colleen, Eileen and Maureen—their husbands, partners, and children, his brother Tommy, and to all those still with us who were graced by his life. Much love.

Ed Pierce 2/25/1951 – 8/28/2020
My cousin Ed and I were supposed to be born at relatively the same time. I came 5 weeks early and he 5 weeks late. Growing up, my brother Mitch and I loved to go to Aunt Frances and Aunt Rose’s to see Eddy and Tommy. I was sure when I was a young girl that I was going to marry Ed until they told me I couldn’t because he was my first cousin. I always loved him and held him in the greatest regard. I was so happy when he married Kathy and then came Eileen, then Maureen and then Colleen. Now we have their beautiful partners and children. Ed was always so proud of all of them and his four grandchildren were his treasure.
Ed was a healer both as an anesthetist and as a person. His kind soul and his quick Irish wit always took us away from anything that was bothering us. He had a deep love of God and loved his Catholic faith that showed in his actions and spirit. He had a soft and huge heart. My parents loved him and Kathy and the girls so much. We had great times together and some good Irish fights that always ended up with laughter.
Ed loved his Irish roots and when Eileen married a man right from Dublin he got the chance to visit Ireland several times. He loved Dave and Jeremy and Jimmy who made his girls so happy. He always tried to keep our family together. I am heartbroken that because of the pandemic I can’t be with you now.
So Ed, now we let you go….. You now see the One who made you and who loves you more than we can know. You’ll reconnect with those you love who have made this journey before you and in God’s most perfect time, we will follow. God will thank you for all the good you did on this earth and you will be able to see it. We believe this in faith. We will try to take care of each other because I’m sure you miss us as much as we miss you. We will help your Kathy, Ed.
So thank you Ed for being you and sharing your love with me. God gave us a great gift in you… we were truly blessed. l will see you again when it is my turn to see the loving face of God and the wonders that you now begin to experience. I pray this Irish blessing for you:
May the good earth be soft under you
when you rest upon it,
and may it rest easy over you when,
at the last, you lay out under it,
And may it rest so lightly over you
that your soul may be out
from under it quickly,
and up, and off,
And be on its way to God. Amen
Dia a bheith in éineacht leat. God be with you!
Love, Mary Ann
