Obituary for Edward T. Lynch Sr.

Edward T. Lynch Sr.
October 13, 1912 - June 22, 2008

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30am June 28, 2008 at Church of The Incarnation, 544 Prospect St, Wethersfield

Late in the evening on Sunday, June 22, 2008, Edward Lynch, Sr. of Wethersfield remarked to a family member that he was "coming to the end of a long road." The next morning, after a remarkably short illness, Ed passed away at the Hartford Hospital. Ed was 95 years of age and, except for a few hours of his life, maintained a sharp and witty sense of humor, kept physically and mentally active, and remained socially connected with his family as well as many old and new friends. Regardless of his advancing years, Ed never lost his passion for lively conversation and for meeting people: once he was introduced to you, the connection was permanent. Ed was an individual you were not likely to forget. Ed Lynch, Sr. began his life's journey on October 13, 1912 when he was born to Margaret Ryan (a homemaker) and Thomas Lynch (a Hartford city worker). Ed was predeceased by a younger " brother, Tom, when he was a young child. However, Ed remained in his family home on Broad Street in Hartford's South End for 80 years. During that time, he attended Hartford's public schools, graduating from Bulkeley High School in 1929. Upon graduation from Bulkeley High, Ed went on to attend Yale University, completing a bachelor's degree in History and French in 1933. From Yale,Edwent on to be one of 12 graduates in the first class at the Hartford College of Law in 1937. The Hartford College of law eventually evolved into the University of Connecticut's School of law. Ed went on to serve the State of Connecticut as its Chief Fiscal Officer and Director of Administrative Services in the Department of Education. Edward Lynch, Sr. managed the budgets of Connecticut's vocational/technical schools/colleges for forty years before retiring from state service in 1975. Upon retirement, Ed Lynch most enjoyed the time he spent summering along the Niantic River, doing mechanical or building projects at home, engaging in family activities, reading, and listening to opera and classical music. He also left his family home in Hartford's South End and moved to Wethersfield in 1992. At the new house, Ed enjoyed a superb view of the Wethersfield Country Club Golf Course and had a wonderful workshop that could accommodate all of his projects-both new and continuing. Ed was, above all, devoted to his home, wife, and family. He leaves behind his beloved and beautiful wife, Kathleen, with whom he would have celebrated his 65thwedding anniversary on Thursday, June 26, 2008. Kathleen ("Kay") and Ed have three surviving married sons: Edward Lynch Jr. (and Drina), of New Britain, John Lynch(and Christine), of Cheshire, and Brian Lynch (and Lynn),of Waterford. A sister, Kathy, predeceased Edward, John, and Brian. Ed and Kay have five grandchildren: Amy, David, Keara, Kevin, and Matthew Lynch. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, June 28, 10:30 A.M., at the Church of the Incarnation on Prospect Street in Wethersfield. The Mass will commemorate the long and productive life, spirit, and sense of humor that belonged to a man once described by a family friend as a "national treasure." There will be no calling hours. Funeral services will be private and held at the Farley Sullivan Funeral Home in Wethersfield. The family requests that donations to the American Cancer Society, particularly for childhood leukemia and for colon cancer research, be considered in lieu of flowers.
