Obituary for Edmund F. "Bud" Cashman

Edmund F. “Bud” Cashman, 90, longtime resident of Wethersfield, beloved husband of Rhea (Berube) Cashman, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, January 6, 2015 in Hartford. Bud was born January 27, 1924, son of the late Patrick F. and Theresa (Breen) Cashman. He was raised in the Frog Hollow section of Hartford, forging his Irish identity in the neighborhood streets. Bud was blessed with Irish charm and wit. Over many a pint of Guinness and shots of Paddy’s Irish Whiskey, he honed his fine gift of story-telling. And on occasion he would reach the highest most plaintive notes in Danny Boy, and live to regret it the next morn. Bud’s proudest accomplishment was serving our country during World War II in the United States Air Force, as a radio operator in the cockpit of the B-29 that flew in the Last Mission over Tokyo. He was one of two remaining members of that infamous crew. After returning from the military, Bud earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Connecticut. He owned and operated the Brainerd-Cashman Insurance Agency, putting his gift of gab to use in the service of his clients who enjoyed his attention. After work he found joy in the company of his friends, the former “Knights of the Round Table,” in the grillroom of Wethersfield Country Club, where he was a 60-year member. He so loved the game of golf, and practiced to near perfection. Edmund will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his loving family: his wife of 68 years, Rhea; three daughters and their spouses, Patti and Paul Smith of Cromwell, Sharon and Dr. Richard Truex of Wethersfield, and Michele and Gary Fendler of Wethersfield; two sisters, Mary Lavoie of West Hartford, and T. Louise Kelly of Palm Beach, FL; a brother and sister-in-law, Dr. Raymond P. and Elaine Cashman of Charlotte, NC; several nieces and nephews; as well as five adored grandchildren and their spouses, Brendan Patrick Truex and Eileen, of Wethersfield, Colin Cashman Truex and Jenny, of San Diego, CA, Tessa Breen Truex Beruff and Jorge, of NY, NY, Rory Olmsted Truex and Katherine, of Philadelphia, PA, Patrick Cashman Renstrom of Boston, MA; two cherished great grandchildren, Griffin Olmsted Truex and Campbell Brewster Truex, both of San Diego, CA. The family wishes to thank the extraordinary staff at Hartford Hospital and Jefferson House for their care and compassion, especially Dr. Aized Imtiaz. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Edmund’s life will be held Saturday, January 10, 2015 at 11am in the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect St., Wethersfield. Interment will follow the Mass in Village Cemetery, Marsh St., Old Wethersfield (with full Military Honors). In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made in Edmund’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, Kansas 66675. Edmund’s funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield.
