Delphine M. Bielitz (O’Brien), age 90, died peacefully on the afternoon of May 12, 2012 at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. Del was born on June 30, 1921, the daughter of James William O’Brien and Corinne Lawton O’Brien. She grew up in New Haven and graduated from Hillhouse High School in 1939. After graduating from the Junior College of Physical Therapy in New Haven, she worked for Dr. Julius Grower in Middletown, assisting in many roles from 1942 to 1955. Del and her husband, Richard “Dick” Bielitz (married in 1942) moved to Glastonbury in 1956, where she dedicated herself to her family and to volunteer work, giving many years and helping to establish the Glastonbury Thrift Shop (The Village for Families and Children, Inc.). She also volunteered with the Girl Scouts and was a den mother to a very colorful group of neighborhood Cub Scouts. In 1971, Del entered the retail clothing business and successfully managed Harvey’s of Rocky Hill for many years until retiring. Few people knew that she was a talented artist in watercolors and decorative painting. She particularly enjoyed her association with The Historical Society of Early American Decoration, through which her work was displayed at the William Benton Museum of Art in Storrs. Del and Dick had many wonderful memories of lifetime friends, their travels and warm association with the Nayaug Yacht Club, entertaining at their other home in Vermont, and their wonderful neighbors of Knob Hill. Delphine was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Always kind, caring and thoughtful, her family will miss her love, her quiet spirit and her warm smile. Delphine was predeceased by her husband, her parents and her brother (J. Donald O’Brien). She is survived by a son, Steven A. Bielitz of Glastonbury and two grandsons, James Bielitz-Ransom of Glastonbury and Niles Scott Krieger of Westport. Memorial donations can be made to The Village for Family and Children, Inc., Development Office, 1680 Albany Avenue, Hartford, CT 06105. Friends may call at The Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 50 Naubuc Avenue, Glastonbury, CT from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012. A memorial service and celebration of Delphine’s life will be privately held by the family.
