Daniel R. Abbate, 81, “Dan” of Wethersfield, passed away on Friday, August 29, 2008, surrounded by his loving family. He was born in New York City on June 2, 1927, to the late Joseph and Margaret (Ambruso) Abbate and lived in Hartford before moving to Wethersfield in 1965. He served in the Merchant Marines during WWII. He joined the Hartford Fire Department on October 4, 1948 and was promoted to Deputy Chief in October, 1971. Dan retired in November, 1989 and enjoyed many winters in Florida. He was an active participant in the Veteran Firemen’s Association, the Policemen and Firemen’s Association, the Firemen's Benevolent Society, the Firefighter's Protective Association and served as past President of the Hartford Firefighters Federal Credit Union. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Ruth; his son, Daniel J. Abbate and his wife, Joan of Glastonbury; granddaughters, Jocelyn and Emily Abbate, of Glastonbury; granddaughter, Keri Abbate Kemish and her husband, Jason of Kensington; grandson, Kevin Abbate of Rocky Hill; and great granddaughter, Paige Kemish; brother, Andrew Abbate and his wife, Maria, of Hartford; Ledia Abbate, sister-in-law, of Windsor Locks; Alyce Abbate, sister-in-law of Newington and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son, Francis D. Abbate; brothers Rocco “Brooksie”, Joseph, Salvatore, and John and sisters, Carmela “Millie” Scolsky and Rose Piwarczyk; sisters-in-law, Rose and Grace and brothers-in-law, Stephen and Peter. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, September 2, at 9am from the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd, Wethersfield, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in the Church of The Incarnation, 544 Prospect St, Wethersfield. The family will receive friends on Monday, September 1, from 4-8pm at the Funeral Home. Entombment will follow at Cedar Hill Cemetery, 453 Fairfield Ave, Hartford.
