Charles “Charlie” Cavanaugh, 65, of West Hartford passed away on Friday, March 22, 2013. He is survived by two brothers, Edward Cavanaugh and Richard Cavanaugh of Glastonbury; a nephew, Jason Cavanaugh; two nieces, Kelly Cavanaugh and Heather (Parker) Cavanaugh; and many beloved family, friends, and neighbors. Charlie was predeceased by his parents, Richard and Frances Cavanaugh, who lovingly raised him in their South Glastonbury home, where Charlie spent most of his life. Born on January 1, 1948—the first baby born at Hartford Hospital that year—Charlie proudly touted the title of “New Year’s Baby” his entire life. Charlie was a spirited social butterfly who lived out loud. He loved to dance, sing, and play the harmonica and accordion for all who met his acquaintance. He enjoyed attending dances hosted by the Special Needs Program of West Hartford, and he always looked forward to showcasing his steps at the annual Mosaic Starlight Ball. An avid fan of Elvis Presley, Charlie was known for his spot-on impressions and his memorable dance moves. In fact, his notable Elvis impersonation earned him the Community Enterprise talent show title a few years ago. His art talents also won him recognition at the annual Mosaic Art Show, where Charlie shared creations that included posters, paintings, ceramics, and birdhouses. Charlie was part of the West Hartford Special Olympics team and went on to win a silver medal for bowling, along with many other awards. He also participated on the Special Olympics volleyball team for Mosaic. Travel was another favorite pastime of Charlie’s. He and his friends journeyed to Lake George, Cape Cod, Washington, D.C. and Wisconsin—and enjoyed many Connecticut destinations as well. There was never a shortage of shenanigans on these trips. Charlie played hard, but he also worked hard, working full-time at Community Enterprise for nearly 20 years, where he put together boxes for the U.S. Army. Family and friends will remember Charlie on Sunday, March 24 from 5 to 7pm at the Farley Sullivan Funeral Home, 50 Naubuc Ave., Glastonbury and all who wish to share in the remembrance are welcome. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, March 25, 2013 at 10am in St. Augustine Church, 55 Hopewell Rd., South Glastonbury.
