Obituary for Joan Winton (Wise)

Joan (Wise) Winton of Wethersfield, died Thursday, April 14, 2016, peacefully in her home with her daughter by her side. She was the devoted daughter of the late Harold F. and Florence Wise. Joan was the beloved wife of the late Peter A. Winton; mother of the late David H. Winton, tragically lost on September 11, 2001 and Sara W. and her husband Roderick Coffey of Amston; sister of Marilyn and her husband, Edward Zieger of New Britain; sister of Thomas and his wife, Barbara of Wethersfield; sister of Harold and his wife, Karen Wise of Trumbull; adored grandmother to Jaclyn and Emily Coffey of Amston. Joan attended Central Connecticut State College , after which she took courses at the American Institute of Banking. In 1959, she began her career in banking as a teller at Hartford National Bank and Trust Co. Later, she worked at Connecticut Bank and Trust Co. in Newington, followed by Constitution National Bank where, in her 30s, she was the only woman officer in Hartford’s youngest commercial bank. The Hartford Courant reported about her in their section of “Women on the Move” in 1969. She left banking when she married and dedicated her life to her family. Never missing a practice, performance or game, she was the quintessential mother. Joan’s family would like to especially thank her comforting caregivers, Krystyna and Jadwiga – as well as the hospice staff from Masonicare – who enabled her to be at peace in her home. Friends may call on Sunday, April 17 from 5-7pm at Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, April 18 at 10 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church, 601 Silas Deane Hwy., Wethersfield. Burial will follow in Village Cemetery, Marsh St. Wethersfield. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to David H. Winton Foundation, P.O. Box 290684, Wethersfield, CT 06129. To extend online condolences, please visit Farleysullivan.com
