Obituary for Elizabeth "Betty" Smith (Keen)

Elizabeth "Betty" Smith (Keen)
Elizabeth "Betty" (Keen) Smith, 89, of Wethersfield, loving wife of nearly 56 years and forever best friend to the late Robert "Bob" W. Smith passed away peacefully at home due to complications of Parkinson's Disease on Wednesday, November 11, 2015, with her loving family by her side. Elizabeth was born in Hartford on August 19, 1926 to the late Francis Killian Keen and Mary (Elliott) Keen and she was the loving older sister to the late Patricia Kinsella. Betty grew up in Hartford and attended St. Augustine School and Bulkeley High School and was employed at Society for Savings Bank. Betty's involvement in the Hartford Young Democrats, where she served as the first woman president, was time well spent, since that is where she first met Bob. Betty and Bob married on December 31, 1955 and settled in Hartford to start their family before moving to Wethersfield in 1968. Betty was a devoted and loving mother to her nine children. Betty and Bob raised their children by example and shared many wonderful years together until Bob's passing in November 2011. Betty leaves son Robert Smith and partner Alice Linnehan of Madison, daughter Kathleen Lilley and husband Ray of Wallingford, son Michael Smith of Chatham, MA, daughter Ellen Foley and husband Rob of Wethersfield, daughter Sheila Elliot and husband Doug of Rocky Hill, son Danny Smith and wife Cathi of Wethersfield, daughter Maura Cantwell and husband Glenn of Glastonbury, daughter Maggie Seaver and husband Vin of Rocky Hill and daughter Eileen Bjarno and husband Arne of Glastonbury. Betty was a proud and supportive "Nana" to her 19 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren; William and Mallory Smith, Raymond Lilley (wife Tiffany and sons Dominic, Logan and Lawson), Hannah Smith, Christine Smith (husband Matt and daughter Alexandra), Shannon Seeley (husband Jay and children Shea and Kane), Robbie Foley, Douglas Elliot (wife Ashley), Jaclyn Elliot, Julia and Brendan Smith, Paige and Patrick Cantwell, Katie and Tommy Seaver and Emily, Morgan, Madelyn and Claire Bjarno. Betty also leaves her brother-in-law Pete Kinsella and wife Linda, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Beverly and Glenn Billiter, many loving nieces, nephews and other relatives. Betty was a communicant of The Church of the Incarnation, a member of the Incarnation Women's Club and a long-time member of the Wethersfield Historical Society, the Wethersfield Senior Advisory Board and the Griswoldville Chapel Ladies Aid. Chatham on the Cape held a special place in Betty's heart and she loved making memories there with her family and her dear friends. She cherished time spent with her "honey" and her family and always enjoyed watching all the children's activities. Betty made sure she shared her stories so we could all appreciate the fabric of our lives. She was especially proud to be an 11th direct descendant of Governor William Bradford of the Mayflower. Betty was proud of her Irish heritage and enjoyed everything Irish. She was a beautiful and strong woman that taught all of us the importance of being compassionate, forgiving and loving. The family would like to express special thanks to Anna, who not only helped care for Betty but was her true friend, and to Dr. Gregory Walsh for his years of care and guidance. Friends may call from 3-6 PM on Sunday November 15, 2015 at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd. Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Betty's life will be held on Monday November 16, 2015 at 10:00 am in the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect St Wethersfield. All are asked to go directly to church. Burial will follow in Cedar Hill Cemetery, 453 Fairfield Ave. Hartford.
