Obituary for John W. "Jack" Curnias

John W. “Jack” Curnias, 95, of Wethersfield, beloved husband of the late Marvel “Jean” (Norton) Curnias, peacefully passed away Tuesday June 23, 2015 surrounded by his family, at St. Francis Hospital. John was born July 24, 1919 in Bayonne, NJ and raised in Shelton and Derby, son to the late William John and Mary (Schumsky) Curnias. He was employed at the Lincoln Airplane and Flying School, Lincoln, NE as an Airplane/Engine Mechanic until 1942, at which time he enlisted in the military, serving our country during World War II in the US Navy. Having a flying background, he became a Naval Pilot, attaining the rank of Lt. Commander. After his Honorable discharge, John continued in the Naval Reserves, as well as enrolling in the University of Nebraska where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering. He moved to CT in 1950 and resided in Wethersfield where he and his wife Jean raised their three children. John was employed for 40+ years at Pratt & Whitney Aircraft as a Flight Engineer, retiring in 1986. He was a devoted communicant of the Church of the Incarnation, Wethersfield. John, along with Jean, volunteered his time extensively to delivering meals for Meals on Wheels, along with transporting cancer patients who did not have rides to doctors appointments. He was a member of the 2 man Neighborhood Citizen Patrol with his son Jim until present. John will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his family; two sons and daughters-in-law, William & Deborah Curnias of Columbia, SC, James & Susan Curnias of Wethersfield; a daughter and son-in-law Deborah “Debi” & Craig Davis of Wethersfield; seven grandchildren, Kevin, John, & Christina Curnias, Kelly, Melissa, James, & Abigail Davis; five great grandchildren; a sister in law, Verna Norton of Huntington Beach, CA. Friends and relatives may pay their respects to the family Friday morning from 9:00-10:30am at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating John’s life will be held 11am in the Church of the Incarnation, 544 Prospect Street, Wethersfield. Interment will follow the Mass in Village Cemetery (Hart Section), Marsh Street, Old Wethersfield. The family requests in lieu of flowers, that memorial donations are suggested in John’s name to National MS Society, Connecticut Chapter, 659 Tower Ave., First Floor, Hartford, CT 06112.
