Obituary for Giuseppina Mariano (Carlone)

Giuseppina Carlone Mariano, a strong, kind, gentle woman, surrounded by her loving family, was ushered home to heaven on August 15, the feast of our Lady’s Assumption. Giuseppina was born to the late Giuseppe and Angelantonia Carlone in Compodipietra, Italy on January 29, 1923. She was 91 years old. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Saverio, who she took wonderful care of, a sister Adelina Gammiero and a brother, Armando Carlone, both from Italy. She is survived by two sisters, Martina DeLuca from Montreal, Canada and Vilma Cefaratti from Compobasso, Italy, her two adoring sons, Anthony and his wife Ann of Marlborough, CT and Armand and his wife Dot from Glastonbury, CT; five grandchildren Heather Bennett and her husband Steven of Douglas, MA, Erik Mariano of Marlborough, CT, John Mariano of Cromwell, CT, Aaron Mariano and his wife Becky of Boston, MA, and Ali Mariano of North Andover, MA. one great grandson, Connor Bennett, a special part of the family, Jennifer Pollack, two special nieces from Montreal, Pina DeLuca and Sarah Sifoni, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Giuseppina and Saverio midway in their life, without speaking a word of English, left the comfort of their surroundings in Italy and traveled to Connecticut with their sons in order to provide them with a better life. Saverio’s brothers Chris, Michael and Erminio and their families guided and supported them through this process of re-establishing here in America. Giuseppina retired after many years of service at Carling Switch in Elmwood. ‘Nonna’ taught us all what family is about…la famiglia. She will lovingly be remembered for her outstanding gift of Italian cooking. No one was better in the kitchen than Nonna. She rarely sat down to relax, choosing to bake a seasonal specialty including her famous pizzeles or cherry cheesecake. Her ‘green thumb’ boasted gorgeous flower and vegetable gardens throughout the years. She took great pride with her sewing and crocheting ability. All were greeted at her door with a colorful array of hand crochet booties! Nonna enjoyed the simple pleasures of life…a fresh fig, parmagiano reggiano, crusty pane, fresh fruita, and of course delicious pasta. She has left us with wonderful, loving memories. The family is grateful to the nurses, aides and staff at the Marlborough Health Care Center for the personal care extended to Nonna over the past two years. Calling hours will be on Friday, August 22 from 5-8 at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 50 Naubuc Avenue, Glastonbury. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, August 23 at 11am in St. John Fisher Church, 30 Jones Hollow Road, Marlborough. All attendees should go directly to the church. Burial will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery Mausoleum, 1309 Stanley St. New Britain. To extend online condolences, share a memory, and/or light a memorial candle, please visit farleysullivan.com.
