Obituary for Mary Elizabeth "Bette" Foran (Meskell)

FORAN. Mary Elizabeth (Meskell) Foran, “Bette”, 98, of Glastonbury, CT and formerly of Daytona Beach FL, died Friday evening, June 19, 2014 at home. She was the wife of Donald R Foran for over 65 years. Mary was born in Springfield, MA on May 1, 1916, the daughter of Simon T. and Mary E. (Henry) Meskell. Bette graduated from Bulkeley High School, Hartford CT, with the class of 1934A, which graduated in February of that year. Within a short time she was working at Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company, a clerical job which she obtained in the middle of the Great Depression, because the interviewing officer was impressed by the fact that she showed up for her scheduled interview on time in the middle of a severe snow storm, while a number of regular employees were absent. She made a friend there, Mary V. Foran, who introduced Bette to her brother and Bette’s future husband, Donald. She later worked the “housewife’s shift”, 6pm to 10pm at Travelers Insurance Company. After her family was grown she worked as a clerk for the Glastonbury office of the US Postal Service. Bette was a communicant of St. Paul Roman Catholic Church in Glastonbury for over 65 years. She served as president of the St Paul’s League of the Sacred Heart; assisted with altar care, and was a member of the St. Catherine’s Discussion Group. She loved God and her family. She was predeceased by her husband Donald who died in 2007 and her beloved daughter Judith who died in 1978, and four brothers: Walter J., Richard T., Robert H., and Joseph K Meskell. Bette is survived by 4 children: Richard and his wife Mary Lou Foran of Berlin CT, and Peter, Paul and Kathleen Foran of Glastonbury; and 4 grandchildren: Christopher and his wife Cory Foran of New Britain, Jeffrey and his wife Debra Foran of Coventry, Jennifer and her husband Sean Casey of Patterson NY, and Janet and her husband Herman Schillinger of Rosenheim Germany. They blessed her with 9 great grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren: Tatjana, Florian, Selina, Cathy Betty and Denise Schillinger; Brandon, Dylan, Justin, Jocelyn and Jianna Foran, and Jack Casey. She is also survived by most loved in-laws: Julia Meskell of Ponte Vedra Beach FL, Carole Meskell of Newburyport MA; Mary Foran of New Port Richey FL, and Jack and Patricia Foran of Norfolk VA, and 40 nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her high school friend of 80 years, Adelaide (McKinney) Andrews. The Foran family offers our heartfelt gratitude to the many caregivers who gave such kind care to Mary and Donald Foran during the past eight and a half years, including Yaa Kesewah, Rachel Dawkins-Guliano, Marion Jackson, Elaine Warner, and the Angelic Nursing and Home Care Registry. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at St. Paul Church, 2577 Main Street, Glastonbury, at 10 am on Wed. June 25. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, Hebron Avenue, Glastonbury. There will be no visiting hours. The family requests in lieu of flowers, and that memorial donations be made to a charity of the donor’s choice. In remembrance of Mary/Bette, “Pay it Forward”; reach out a helping hand and do a kindness for someone – a loved one, a friend, a neighbor or a stranger.
