Vivian Kilbourne DeMio, 98, beloved wife of the late Angelo J. DeMio (for 72 years), passed away peacefully on March 20th with her family by her side. Born in New Britain, Connecticut on February 23, 1923, she was the eldest daughter of Agnes (From) and Roy Hawkes Kilbourne. Her father was a tenth generation descendent of the founders of Concord and Deerfield, Massachusetts, and early settlers of Wethersfield. Vivian graduated from New Britain High School, class of 1940, she later studied Accounting at Morse College in Hartford. Her early years were spent working in the Personnel Department at the State Capitol, where she met her future husband, Angelo, who also worked at the Capitol. They were married November 26, 1949 at St. Joseph’s Cathedral in Hartford, CT.
As a mother of three sons, Vivian became a home maker for many years. She and her family enjoyed summers at their vacation home at West Beach in Westbrook, CT. As the boys got older she had the desire to return to work, becoming and Intermittent Claims Examiner at the Connecticut Labor Department and later transferring to the Department of Transportation as an Accountant in the Fiscal Office. She retired in 1985 after 22 years of State Service. After retiring Vivian and her husband did considerable travelling, including many cruises. They visited the Caribbean Islands, Mexico, Panama Canal, Hawaii, Bermuda, Canada, Europe and often to Las Vegas. As snowbirds they also spent some winter vacation time in Florida. Vivian was a woman of many aspirations and achievements, she never turned down a challenge whether it be in her personal or vocational life. Vivian always looked on the bright side of life and enjoyed everything life had to offer to the fullest. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother, she enjoyed every moment with her family and kept them all on their toes.
