Obituary for Vincent Mahoney

Vincent R. Mahoney, devoted husband to Gemma (McBride) Mahoney passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on October 6, 2022. He was born on May 8, 1949 in Hartford, to Borden V. and Nancy (Collins) Mahoney. Vin spent his childhood growing up in the South End of Hartford. At the age of 6, he contracted polio and was home schooled by his mother that year and learned to walk again with intensive therapy. His athletic career began the following spring when he became a batboy for PAL in the McGinley Little League. A graduate of South Catholic High School, he excelled as an athlete in basketball and baseball. He was fortunate to be mentored and coached by John Sullivan in CYO and Joe Reilly at South Catholic. Vin attended Saint Bonaventure University, graduating Cum Laude, majoring in History. He went on to achieve his Master’s Degree in Education from the University of Hartford.
Vin started his career in teaching for the Hartford Public School System. Over the course of his 40 years in Hartford, he touched the lives of many. He always looked at the total needs of his students, ensuring each child was recognized on their birthday by bringing in a cake for every student on their special day. One of the major highlights of his career was the publication of an article in Northeast Magazine and Readers Digest by a former student, Cindy Brown Austin, who wrote what a major impact Vin had on her life. Always an athlete at heart, you could find “Mr. Mahoney” participating in daily recess kickball games and be sure he never went easy on them. Towards the end of his career, he also volunteered his time as an intramural basketball coach at Kennelly School.
Aside from work he enjoyed fastpitch softball in which he was inducted into the Fastpitch Hall of Fame. Upon retirement he spent time in Florida golfing and enjoyed his bowling league in Connecticut. The Mahoney family would like to thank his AA Support group, especially his Tuesday night buddies and the Doctors, Nurses and Staff of UConn John Dempsey Hospital.

In addition to his wife, Vin leaves his loving daughters, Katie Mahoney, Meghan Cancelliere and her husband Anthony, his pride and joy grandchildren, Devin Mahoney and Anna Cancelliere. He will also be greatly missed by his sister, Mary-Anne Sullivan and his brother Richard Mahoney and his wife Ann and his nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and many friends.
