Obituary for Stanley C Tabara

Stanley C. Tabara, age 93 passed away on Saturday, November 11, 2023. He was born on August 15, 1930 in Hartford to the late Walter and Sophie (Janucik) Tabara and grew up on Monroe Street in Hartford’s South-West neighborhood. He attended Southwest (Kennelly) Elementary School, graduated from Bulkeley High School in 1950 and attended Hillyer College. He served as Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed in Japan and Otis Air Force Base in Massachusetts. He was employed by the C.G. Bostwick Roofing Company, Sound Reduction Corporation and the Travelers Insurance Company. He was a communicant of SS. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church and St. Lawrence O’Toole Catholic Church, Hartford and later, St. James Catholic Church in Rocky Hill.
Stanley was very sociable and easy to get along with. He was a Scout in Boy Scout Troop 32 at Southwest School, played CYO Basketball for St. Lawrence O’Toole Church and was a member of the Boys’ Club at Bulkeley High School. As an adult, he was a member of Connecticut Sheet Metal Workers Local 40 and was active in the Holy Name Society at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, the Southwest Civic Association, McGinley-Crafa Little League, the South Catholic High School Parent’s Club and Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop 105 where he served as Committee Chairman and Treasurer. Stanley also served as Moderator at various Hartford polling places during municipal and national elections. He enjoyed playing pool on Monday nights at Hartford Elks Lodge #19, bowling and lunch meetings with the West Hartford Regents Men’s Club. Stanley loved polka dancing and often reminisced about fun nights at Hartford’s Polish National Home where he met his late wife, Marcella. With family and friends, they polka danced into their late 70’s.
Stanley and Marcella married on October 29, 1955 and raised their family in Hartford’s Foster Heights’ neighborhood where they hosted holiday gatherings, backyard picnics, graduation celebrations and beach days with their Mountain Street neighbors. They enjoyed cruises to Bermuda and the Caribbean, and traveled to Puerto Rico, Florida, Hawaii, Cape Cod and Maine. Stanley enjoyed large family picnics at Chatfield Hollow, day trips to Hammonasset Beach, Saturday night family card games, playing wiffle ball with his children and watching their baseball games at the park. He loved body surfing in the big waves at Misquamicut Beach, RI and Wildwood Crest, NJ.
In 2007, Stanley and Marcella moved to Rocky Hill where they continued their active social life traveling to local casinos’ and bus trips to historic sites along the east coast. Stanley was an avid golfer and often played at Goodwin Park with his late brother, Walter and their friends from the old neighborhood. He was an avid fan of UConn women’s basketball, the Boston Red Sox and WWE. Although he had many interests, he was happiest when surrounded by his wife and children including Sue, his favorite daughter-in-law and John, his favorite son-in-law.
Stanley was recently predeceased by his wife of 67 years, Marcella. He leaves his daughter Karen Bowen (John) of Newington, son Steven of Newington and son Robert (Susan) of North Granby and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Walter and Sophie (Janucik) Tabara and his identical twin brother Walter Tabara, Jr. He also leaves his long-time Mountain Street friend, Ed Bobak and the Mountain Street neighborhood kids, several golfing buddies and the Holly Hill Drive friends.
