Sheila (McMahon) Verre, 61, wife of Mark Verre of Wethersfield, passed away Sunday May 31, 2020 due to complications from ovarian cancer. She was born in Hartford on December 18, 1958, daughter of Kathleen (Cosgrove) McMahon and the late Thomas F. McMahon. Born and residing in Hartford before the family moved to East Hartford, Sheila attended Robert J. O’Brien School. The family then moved to West Hartford where she attended Morley School before transferring to Saint Thomas the Apostle School the following year. Sheila graduated from Northwest Catholic High School in June of 1976 and was the editor of the yearbook her senior year. She was a competitive Irish step dancer at the Griffith Academy and began teaching at the academy before entering college. She graduated from Saint Anselm College in June of 1980 as one of the few women majoring in Business/Economics. She was the editor of the senior yearbook and was also named to “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges”. Her first professional role was as an Underwriter at Industrial Risk Insurers, Inc., where she advanced to senior account roles. During this time Sheila was studying for, and ultimately achieved, her Master’s Degree (MBA) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Sheila then went to work at Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company as a Property Insurance Underwriter. She was the third employee hired into this new business venture for HSB. Sheila retired from HSB as Assistant Vice President to focus her energies on home. Sheila and Mark were married in St. Thomas the Apostle Church of West Hartford in 1987 and lived in East Windsor before settling in Wethersfield in 1988. Three children followed while she maintained her career. After leaving HSB and spending several years at home with her children, she became a para-professional for the Wethersfield Board of Education at Highcrest and Hanmer Schools. Sheila was a member of the Irish American Home Society, the Old Lyme Shores Beach Association and Corpus Christi Church of Christ the King Parish. She also loved gardening and attending all her children’s events when they were younger.
Besides her husband, Mark, and her mother, Sheila will be lovingly remembered by her children, Daniel F. Verre of West Haven, Erin K. Verre of Wethersfield and Brenna K. Verre of Boston, MA, in addition to her pups, Sammie and Charlotte, who adored her. She will also be greatly missed by her siblings, Dennis P. McMahon and his wife Evalyn of Wethersfield, Thomas P. McMahon and his wife Deborah of Rocky Hill, and Eileen M. Peterson and her husband Kenneth of Wethersfield, as well as her siblings in-law Ann (Verre) and Pat Jezewski of Victoria Island, BC, John and Beth (Norton) Verre of Dorchester, MA, Richard D. Verre, Jr. of Westbrook, ME, Michael and Jaynie Schiff-Verre of South Portland, ME, Kevin Verre of Newington and Timothy and Amy Verre of Wethersfield. As well as by 17 nieces and nephews and 8 grand-nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Matthew Carley of Starling Physicians and Dr. Mark Dailey and all the APRNs and nurses at the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center for their unbelievable care, support and compassion for Sheila every step of the way. She was never alone.
Sheila was one of the most loving and compassionate people you will ever meet. She had an unmatched sense of humor and a magnetic personality that everyone gravitated towards. She is irreplaceable and will be sorely missed.
