Sheila (McMahon) Verre, 61, wife of Mark Verre of Wethersfield, passed away Sunday May 31, 2020 due to complications from ovarian cancer. She was born in Hartford on December 18, 1958, daughter of Kathleen (Cosgrove) McMahon and the late Thomas F. McMahon. Born and residing in Hartford before the family moved to East Hartford, Sheila attended Robert J. O’Brien School. The family then moved to West Hartford where she attended Morley School before transferring to Saint Thomas the Apostle School the following year. Sheila graduated from Northwest Catholic High School in June of 1976 and was the editor of the yearbook her senior year. She was a competitive Irish step dancer at the Griffith Academy and began teaching at the academy before entering college. She graduated from Saint Anselm College in June of 1980 as one of the few women majoring in Business/Economics. She was the editor of the senior yearbook and was also named to “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges”. Her first professional role was as an Underwriter at Industrial Risk Insurers, Inc., where she advanced to senior account roles. During this time Sheila was studying for, and ultimately achieved, her Master’s Degree (MBA) from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Sheila then went to work at Hartford Steam Boiler Inspection and Insurance Company as a Property Insurance Underwriter. She was the third employee hired into this new business venture for HSB. Sheila retired from HSB as Assistant Vice President to focus her energies on home. Sheila and Mark were married in St. Thomas the Apostle Church of West Hartford in 1987 and lived in East Windsor before settling in Wethersfield in 1988. Three children followed while she maintained her career. After leaving HSB and spending several years at home with her children, she became a para-professional for the Wethersfield Board of Education at Highcrest and Hanmer Schools. Sheila was a member of the Irish American Home Society, the Old Lyme Shores Beach Association and Corpus Christi Church of Christ the King Parish. She also loved gardening and attending all her children’s events when they were younger.
Besides her husband, Mark, and her mother, Sheila will be lovingly remembered by her children, Daniel F. Verre of West Haven, Erin K. Verre of Wethersfield and Brenna K. Verre of Boston, MA, in addition to her pups, Sammie and Charlotte, who adored her. She will also be greatly missed by her siblings, Dennis P. McMahon and his wife Evalyn of Wethersfield, Thomas P. McMahon and his wife Deborah of Rocky Hill, and Eileen M. Peterson and her husband Kenneth of Wethersfield, as well as her siblings in-law Ann (Verre) and Pat Jezewski of Victoria Island, BC, John and Beth (Norton) Verre of Dorchester, MA, Richard D. Verre, Jr. of Westbrook, ME, Michael and Jaynie Schiff-Verre of South Portland, ME, Kevin Verre of Newington and Timothy and Amy Verre of Wethersfield. As well as by 17 nieces and nephews and 8 grand-nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank Dr. Matthew Carley of Starling Physicians and Dr. Mark Dailey and all the APRNs and nurses at the Helen & Harry Gray Cancer Center for their unbelievable care, support and compassion for Sheila every step of the way. She was never alone.
Sheila was one of the most loving and compassionate people you will ever meet. She had an unmatched sense of humor and a magnetic personality that everyone gravitated towards. She is irreplaceable and will be sorely missed.

To Tom and Dennis and the McMahon Family.

I just heard about Sheila today and was shocked. Sheila was always a very nice person and had a great sense of humor. I remember in 8th grade we sat next to each other on the bus to Washington. We had so much fun and shared a great deal of laughs and memories. Sheila was always smiling and just a very nice person. I am very sorry for your loss.

Words cannot describe the sadness I feel on the passing of my best friend from high school the fun-loving , beautiful and a person with a big heart: Shelia. We were inseparable during our high school years ...always laughing! . Whether it was chasing after the New England whalers to spending days & nights together working on the yearbook! We made the best of the time together! My heart goes out to her beautiful family whom I never had the pleasure of meeting and big supportive hugs to Mrs.Mcmahon, Dennis, Tom & Eileen who I remember so fondly and spent many days hanging out on Auburn Street. The picture below is from 1981 when she visited me in California- we had so much fun cruising up to San Francisco and it was also the last time I spent with her until 2010. I cherish the memories and so blessed for all we shared together. Rest In Peace dear friend sending prayers of eternal love 💗

On behalf of President and Head of School, Christian Cashman, I offer my deepest sympathy on the passing of Sheila McMahon Verre. Sheila, along with her brothers and sister, is a valued member of the Northwest Catholic community, so we mourn her loss along with all who love her. Please know that Sheila and her entire family will be remembered in a special way at our next school-wide Mass. We are very sorry for your loss. ~ Jane Leary, Director of Constituent Relations, Northwest Catholic High School.

Aunt Sheila, you had so many amazing qualities. But, best of all was your sense of humor. You had the ability to light up a place with laughter at the most perfectly timed moment, bringing the whole room together. I know you are free of pain and laughing in the heavens.

I was so saddened to hear about Sheila. It has been years since she left HSB but she was a person who one would not forget. She was smart , funny, not afraid to negotiate and she had a great wit. I remember flying into the grand canyon when we are on a trip to visit a utility and they flew the plane sideways so she could look out the window. I also remember driving over the continental divide with Sheila on another trip. Mark and family , Mary Pat and I will include Sheila , Mark and her family in our prayers at this difficult time.
