Obituary for Richard J. Whalen

Richard J. Whalen Jr., 67, of Portland, the beloved husband of Lillian H. Whalen, died on July 1, 2021 after a courageous two-year battle with pancreatic cancer. A long-time resident of Rocky Hill before recently relocating to Portland, Rick is survived by Lil, his soulmate, business partner and loving spouse of 38 years. He also leaves his daughter, Dr. Allison Whalen Frailey and her husband, Jackman, of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; a son, Daniel J. Whalen and his wife, Anne, of Portland; and two cherished grandchildren, Michael Richard Frailey and Catherine Rose Frailey. He is also survived by a sister, Kathleen W. Dyer, and her husband, Richard, of Manchester; a brother, Thomas F. Whalen and his wife, Sheila, of Manchester; a sister-in-law, Rose Faselle of Cromwell; a sister-in-law, Marie (Penny) Cyr, and her husband, J.P., of East Berlin; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Rick was born on December 22, 1953, the son of the late Richard J. Whalen Sr. and Mildred E. Whalen of East Hartford. He attended local schools in East Hartford and graduated from East Catholic High School in Manchester in 1971. Rick earned his bachelor's degree in 1975 from the Lowell Institute of Technology (now the University of Massachusetts at Lowell). He began a career in banking after college at the New Britain Bank Trust Company, and later served as a Vice President at Fleet Bank, and as a Senior Vice President at Connecticut Valley Bank. Rick and Lil subsequently pursued their entrepreneurial dreams and opened Aldan Business Services, an independent title searching company. During the past thirty years, Rick and Lil provided title searches to numerous law firms and title insurance companies and have searched real property titles in every town in the State of Connecticut. Rick was a prior chairman of the Rocky Hill Economic Development Commission. He also served on the St. James Church Parish Council, and was a former member of the Rocky Hill Lions Club. An avid golfer, Rick played rounds weekly with family and friends for many years. He was a devoted and life-long fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots, and took particular delight in restoring a 1976 Corvette with his son Dan. Rick's family wishes to extend special thanks to Dr. Jill Lacy and her staff, Dr. Joseph Eder, the infusion nurses and technicians, and the palliative care team at the Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital, and to the staff of Middlesex Hospice, for their care and support. Thanks also to Rick and Lil's friends at the Portland West Golf Course. A wake will be held on Wednesday, July 7th, from 4-7 p.m. at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, in Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled on Thursday, July 8th at 10 a.m. at the St. Josephine Bakhita Parish at St. James Church, 767 Elm St., in Rocky Hill. A committal service will follow at Rose Hill Memorial Park, 580 Elm St., in Rocky Hill. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that a donation in Rick's memory may be made either to the Yale Cancer Center and Smilow Cancer Hospital (https://www.yalecancercenter.org/gifts/) or to St. Josephine Bakhita Parish (https://www.saintjosephinebakhita.org/).
