Peter John Baskiewicz, beloved husband of the late Helen (Lezon) Baskiewicz and longtime resident of Wethersfield, passed away peacefully at home Wednesday, December 18, 2019.
Born in Hartford January 3, 1923, he was the son of Polish Immigrants Thomas and Eleanor Baskiewicz. Peter graduated Bulkeley High School and attended Wentworth Institute of Technology in Boston, MA. During World War II, he enlisted in the US Navy and served as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class on the USS Raccoon. Following the war, Peter joined the Hartford Fire Department and retired as a Captain. Even in his 90’s, he had no fear of climbing high ladders.
After retirement, Peter built 2 beach homes in Narragansett, RI. He and his family enjoyed years of wonderful vacations and very happy memories of fishing, clamming, horseshoes, and lobster dinners. In his spare time at home, he enjoyed reading, stained glass making, gardening, bowling and playing setback with the Sacred Heart Men’s Club.
Peter will be remembered as a devoted husband and father. Though a man of few words, he was a great listener and was respected and greatly loved by all who knew him.
Peter was pre-deceased by his wife, Helen. He leaves three daughters and their spouses: Alice and Steve Cass in Paso Robles, CA, Mary Ann and Michael Drysgula of Durham, and Stella and Edward Nowakowski of Rocky Hill; four adored grandchildren, Bryan Cass, Paul Nowakowski, Kristen Ross and Lisa Pethigal; and seven cherished great grandchildren. The family sends heartfelt appreciation and gratitude to Alex, who was his caregiver.
Friends and relatives may pay their respects to the Baskiewicz family, Saturday, December 28, 2019 from 9:30 – 10:30 am at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Homes, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Peter’s life will follow at 11am in Sacred Heart Church of Christ the King Parish, 34 Hartford Ave., Wethersfield. Interment will follow the Mass in Village Cemetery (Pratt Section), Marsh St., Wethersfield. To extend online condolences and/or share a memory, please visit
