Obituary for Nancy Hines (Kane)

Nancy (Kane) Hines, 71, of East Hampton, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday morning (August 22, 2021) after spending a lovely weekend surrounded by her family and the grandchildren she adored. Nancy was born in Hartford, the daughter of John N. Kane and Mary (Lankamp) Kane and graduated from South Catholic High School, Class of 1968. She was married to her husband Robert 'Bob' Hines for 47 years. Nancy was incredibly warm and kind and a friend to everyone she met. She lived her life in service of others, particularly the children and families whose lives touched hers during her nearly forty-year career as an educator.
Nancy earned her Bachelor's degree at Central Connecticut State University and a Master's from St. Joseph College. She started the first decade of her career as the head teacher at the Colchester Co-Op Nursery School. She later retired in 2014 after 25 years as a teacher at the Dr. James H. Naylor School in Hartford, where she worked primarily in an inclusion pre-school classroom that was recognized as a model education environment for autistic children. She presented at numerous state and national conferences on collaborative teaching, autism spectrum disorder and effective utilization of technology in a preschool classroom, for which she was recognized with awards including the IOTA Lambda Sorority Apple for the Teacher Award, Inclusion Person of the Year, Kay L. Bitter Award for Technology in Preschool Education, State of Connecticut Distance Learning Award, and several Teacher of the Year awards at Naylor School. She was also heavily invested in the future of the education profession as the Professional Development Facilitator of the collaboration between Central Connecticut State University and Naylor School, working with hundreds of college students as a mentor and student teaching leader.
As much as seeing and hearing of the accomplishments of her former students would put a smile on her face, Nancy's greatest joy in life was her family. She had a special way of creating magic for the children and was famous for making sure the kid's table was stocked with fun activities and gift bags at family gatherings. In retirement she focused on spoiling her grandsons, connecting daily with her best-friend and sister Linda, and taking drives around the state with her husband, Bob. She is survived by her husband and two sons Brendan Hines and his wife Mandy (Stump) and their two children Holden and Callahan; Ryan Hines and his wife Amanda (Jorgensen) and their two children Lawrence and Johannes. She is also survived by her sister Linda (Kane) Horan and her husband Gerald of Amston and their daughters and granddaughters; and her brother John N. Kane, Jr. and his wife Joan (Pizzoferrato) of Gloucester, MA and their children and grandchildren. Memorial donations may be made in Nancy's name to the Hartford Youth Scholars Fund with The Hartford Foundation for Public Giving (https://hartford.fcsuite.com/erp/donate/create?funit_id=5592). Private family services will be held at Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home in Wethersfield with burial at Cedar Hill Cemetery.
