Obituary for Myroslawa Kusio

Myroslawa "Myra" (Fedyk) Kusio, 97, of Granby and Newington, CT; then Buffalo, NY, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 12, 2023. She was predeceased by all three of her daughters, Susan "Katy" Kusio, Helen Kusio, and Anita (Kusio) Szahaj, as well as her husband, Theodore. Myra is survived by her son, Ted, and his wife, Kate, as well as her son-in-law, Zenon (husband of Anita), and two beloved grandchildren, Michael and Melanie.
Myra was born to Tekla and Peter in Tysmenytsia, Ukraine on December 22, 1925. As children, she and her two brothers survived the Holodomor; Myra watched as the Russians disappeared her father one night when she was just twelve. After the Nazis invaded, she and her mother eventually fled the country, spending almost two years in a German labor camp after the war, before finding their way to New York City in the late 1940s, where Myra met her husband and gave birth to three daughters. Myra and her young family set down roots in Granby in 1959. Ted was born shortly after, and she was busy loving and caring for her family, as well as attending everyone’s band concerts, plays, and other activities. When she realized she needed more to feed and clothe her family, she started working retail, which she continued until she was 84. In 2012, she moved to Newington, to be closer to Anita and her family. Myra was an active member of the Ukrainian community in Hartford for more than sixty years. She was a long-time member of St Michael's Ukrainian Church and displayed her love for music by singing in the choir. Myra and her friends enjoyed playing cards at the Ukrainian National Home almost every week until she moved to Buffalo. (And for the record: She never cheated!) She was an adoring grandmother. Every Wednesday, Myra would make the drive to Newington to visit her two grandchildren, teaching them love, patience, and silliness. Once a year, Myra would cave in to their demands to join them in the swimming pool. Myra learned to love their family dog, Buster, which ultimately led to her adopting her own dog, Lizzie, who filled her final years with joy.
We will always remember Myra as our loving and zany mother, grandmother, and friend.
