Myrna Maria Benjamin (Vergara Martinez), age 82, affectionately known as “Tumai”, as her sons lovingly called her, peacefully passed away on April 30, 2020 at The Reservoir, West Hartford, Connecticut.
Born March 25, 1938 in Caguas, Puerto Rico to the late Cecilio Vergara Perez and Elvira Martinez Pena, she came to New York City in the early 1960’s where all 4 of her sons were born in Brooklyn, NY. She later relocated to Hartford, CT in 1978, and has been a resident for over 40 years.
Myrna was a licensed day-care provider for the State of Connecticut. She had a passion for taking care of children. She loved them like her own. Myrna also had a passion for sewing; even after glaucoma affected her vision in one eye, she would still be on that Singer Sewing machine making a dress or a blouse. Myrna also had a passion for cooking. She was renowned in Hartford for her pasteles. Legendary.
Myrna loved the Lord and her church. On any given day, you could hear her singing a psalm or hymnal. She relished having church members over the house for a prayer revival or just simple fellowship.
Myrna is survived by her husband, Reinaldo Benjamin Pabon; her four sons, Luis Ramon, Ricardo, Carlos Rafael, and Abraham Jorge. She is survived by daughters-in-law, Julie Velasquez and son-in-law, Robert William Davis. She is also survived by Elisha Arnau (whom she considered a son), and Maria Ruiz Good (whom she considered a daughter). In addition, Myrna is survived by three grandchildren, Leilani Arnau, Michael Arnau, and Angie Arnau. She is survived by four siblings, Felicita “Titi Mutyn”, Socorro “Titi Cuquie”(and her brother in law, Victor), Titi Noemi and Tio Charlie (and her sister-in-law, Annie); along with numerous nephews and nieces, grand-nephews and nieces, and great-grand nephews and nieces too many to name, countless of cousins in New York, Florida, and Puerto Rico. She is survived by a vast number of friends, acquaintances and a great number of fellow church goers. Last but not least, she is also survived by her son Abraham’s dog, Rosebud, whom she adored with every ounce and fiber in her being.
