Obituary for Michael W. Smith

Michael W. Smith, a witty, kind and loving man, was called home by the Lord on September 12, 2023. Michael was born in Hartford on May 26, 1959 to the late Robert and Elizabeth (Keen) Smith and was the third born of the nine Smith children. After spending their early years in Hartford, the family moved to Wethersfield where Michael and his siblings were raised in a loving and always lively home creating many cherished memories of their years on Maple Street.
Michael attended East Catholic High School and New Hampshire College before spending several years caddying on the PGA tour for D.A. Weibring. His time as a caddy was also highlighted by opportunities to caddy for Arnold Palmer, Bear Bryant and Tip O’Neil, and being on the road seeing the country. Michael himself was a skilled golfer which lead to positions as an assistant golf pro at Wethersfield Country Club and Eastward Ho! Country Club. Michael spent numerous years as a sales professional for ACopy and later IKON where his communication skills and personability brought him success.
Michael married and settled on Cape Cod, a place that brought him great joy. His proudest moments were being a father to his daughter, Hannah. He treasured their shared love for sports both Hannah’s soccer and all Boston sports teams, and skiing trips to Jay Peak. Michael’s passions were photography of nature, running and biking, and walks on the beach collecting heart-shaped rocks. Michael was drawn to people which in more recent years, led to him providing concierge services after moving to Newport, RI. Michael most recently made his home in Rocky Hill, CT.
In addition to his parents, Michael was predeceased by his brother-in-law, Ray Lilley II. Michael leaves his daughter, Hannah P. Smith, of Chatham, MA. He leaves his loving brothers and sisters and their spouses, Bob Smith (Alice), Kathy Lilley, Ellen Foley (Rob), Sheila Elliot (Doug), Dan Smith (Cathi), Maura Cantwell (Glenn), Maggie Seaver (Vin) and Eileen Bjarno (Arne). Michael really cherished his role as Uncle to William, Mallory, Raymond, Christine, Shannon, Robbie, Doug, Jackie, Julia, Brendan, Paige, Patrick, Katie, Tommy, Emily, Morgan, Maddie and Claire, along with their spouses and children. He leaves many dear cousins and friends. He also leaves his former wife, Annalisa Schmidt.

Michael’s passing leaves a large void in our lives and hearts . . . he will be missed by so many.
