Obituary for Michael Leahy

Michael H. Leahy, 94, died peacefully on February 22, 2020 at The McAuley Home in West Hartford. He was born in the village of Ballycurrane, (near Dingle) in County Kerry, Ireland on January 9, 1926. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Elizabeth (Murphy) Leahy in 2015. Michael left his native Ireland in 1948 and spent the remainder of his life living in Hartford and West Hartford. He served his new country as a soldier in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954, primarily stationed in post-War Germany. Michael spoke often of this period of his life. He worked for the Metropolitan District Commission for 37 years before retiring in 1991. While he embraced many of the cultural aspects of his new country, Michael was true to his Irish roots when it came to listening to Irish music and watching his hometown team, County Kerry compete in the Gaelic Football League. Michael is survived by his four children; Mary Ellen Leahy and her husband Tim of Escondido, CA, Michael Leahy and his wife Lee of Kennebunkport, ME, John Leahy and his wife Susan of Marlborough and James Leahy and his wife Julie of Marlborough. He also leaves six grandchildren; Sean Sandy, Erin Sandy, Taylor Leahy, Cole Leahy, Caitlyn Leahy and Emily Leahy, as well as scores of nephews and nieces both in the US and Ireland. Michael was very close to his one remaining sibling, Eileen Lynch and her husband, John, of Brewster, NY. They spoke daily on the phone and spent decades visiting each other's homes and families. He was predeceased by his beloved sisters, Mary, Hannah and Margaret and brothers James and Thomas. Michael was a very devout Catholic and his daily routine included Mass and the Rosary. His wife, Elizabeth, remained his closest friend after nearly sixty years of marriage. Their interactions during her later years were an example for us all. His devotion in twice daily visits to her care facility were inspirational. Friends may call on Thursday, February 27, 2020 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Road, Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Michael's life will take place on Friday, February 28, 2020 at 10:00 AM in Saint Mark the Evangelist Church of Saint Gianna Beretta Molla Parish, 467 South Quaker Lane, West Hartford.
