Obituary for Marie Donofrio (King)

Marie P. Donofrio, 92, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at home. She joined her late husband Sam on Valentine’s Day. Marie was born in Camden, NJ to Mary (Flood) and James King. It was in Philadelphia that she met the love of her life, Sam Donofrio. Marie and Sam were married on December 30, 1950 and set out for new adventures that included stops in New Orleans, Kansas City, Atlanta, two long winters in Buffalo, Andover, MA and finally Wheaton, IL. Along the way they raised a family. First came Jim in Philadelphia, Tim in New Orleans and Patti in Kansas City. Marie was a devoted mother and found time to work with special needs students while living in Wheaton. Wherever Marie went, her faith played a central role in her life.
In 2012, Marie loaded up the moving van one last time and moved to South Glastonbury, CT. She lived on her own to start and later moved into her daughter Patti’s home where she enriched the lives of her family especially her adoring grandchildren. Mom Mom served as personal chauffeur, head cheerleader and wise counsel to her family and friends right to the end. Marie is also a breast cancer survivor when at the age of 85 she decided to beat cancer and march on. Through all of life’s twist and turns Marie’s daughter Patti was right by her side.
Marie leaves two sons and a daughter – Jim Donofrio (Jane) of Decatur, GA, Tim Donofrio (Beverly) of Stuart, FL, and Patti Dorman (Peter) of South Glastonbury. She never stopped talking about her grandchildren – Cory, Michael, Nick, Joseph, Michael, Sam and Caroline. She was blessed with great grandson Isaac in 2021. She is predeceased by her sisters, Catherine VanGenderen and Joan Bergmaier.
Her final years could not have happened without the loving hands of her faithful caregivers who were with her every step of the way. Mary Adams not only cared for Marie for the last two and half years but became her close friend. The dynamic sister duo of Marcie Joseph and Gloria Fraser took over in the evenings and were godsends. Hartford Healthcare at Home Hospice is a remarkable family and her nurse Amanda Pate was always there with her loving support and a smiling face. Marie’s last chapter would not have been as fulfilling and dignified if not for these angels.
The family will celebrate a Mass of Christian Burial on Thursday, February 23rd at St. Patrick-St. Anthony Church in downtown Hartford at 10:00 A.M. Burial will follow at Green Cemetery in Glastonbury. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Hartford HealthCare at Home Hospice Care, https://hartfordhealthcareathome.org/donate , or the American Cancer Society, American Cancer Society
