Obituary

Maria Lourdes (Bairos) Madden, entered the gates of heaven, into the arms of her lord and savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, November 20, 2019. We would like to think she heard “Well done my child”.
What a beautiful life she lived. Born February 11, 1939 on Santa Maria Island, Azores, Portugal. Arriving in this country at the age of 14. Maria was a devoted and beloved wife of Richard Madden for 58 years (a lifetime). Maria loved her job at Connecticut Mutual in Hartford. Together with Richard, they worked hard to build the American Dream.
Maria adored her two sons, Richard (Cynthia) Madden, of Land O’Lakes, Florida and Michael (Nancy) Madden of Suffield, and raised them with love.
The love of family and the lord defined Maria’s life. Her sisters and sister-in-law were her best friends. Mary Figueiredo (John) of East Hartford, Angelina Nunes of South Windsor, Eugenia Nowik (Joseph Martocci), of East Hartford, Katherine Fischer of Newington, Rose Bairos of East Hartford, Bonnie Brown-Bairos of Glendale, CA and Helen Madden of Glastonbury; and brother-in-law Adelino Duarte of Rocky Hill.
Her overflowing heart then had grandchildren to love and adore. Richard (Michelle) Madden, of Plantsville, Ryan (Cristina) Madden, of Wallingford, Daniel (Katelyn) Madden, of Southington, Elizabeth (Dennis) Hargis of Atlanta, GA, and Victoria Madden of Vernon; as well as her step grandchildren, Kristy (Robert) Preli, with their sons Benjamin and Joseph, William (Anna) Orr, and Jessica (Rick) Orr.
Then the Lord blessed Maria with a great grandson, Jack Madden, as well as a great granddaughter Macayla Madden. How they brought her joy!
Maria was able to enjoy a summer home in Westbrook, in addition to many travels with her husband. However, she was a very simple woman, wanting to love her family, cook and crochet for them. She enjoyed day trips and gatherings, always occupying a table with her beloved sisters an sisters-in-law. Her quite dignity followed her through life, where her faith provided a peace that was always present in her.
Marias extended family is much too large to mention by name, but provided a sense of pride as she followed their accomplishments.
Maria was predeceased by her parents Antonio and Mariana Bairos, father and mother-in-law James and Veronica Madden, brothers Joe, Tony, and baby brother John Bairos, sister Helena Duarte, brothers-in-law James Madden, John Nunes, George Oulundsen, Thomas Fischer, Willard St. Pierre, Bernard Nowik, sisters-in-law, Teresa Oulundsen and Marion St. Pierre. They are already reunited!
Maria and Richard found loving care and support at St. Francis Hospital, 5th Floor, Congestive Heart Failure Unit & Services program. Maria’s loved ones treasured every extra moment that they were given with her thanks to these caregivers, especially the nursing staff. On Maria’s final days, she was home surrounded by all the people who loved her, never ending visitors, a home full of love, a very precious niece, Maria Cerejo, who never let her side.
Calling hours will be held Sunday, November 24, 2019 from 4-7pm at the Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home, 34 Beaver Rd., Wethersfield. A Mass of Christian Burial celebrating Maria’s life will be Monday, November 25th at 10am in St. James’s Church of St. Josephine Bakita Parish, 767 Elm St. Rocky Hill, where Maria and her husband faithfully attended Mass together and found much comfort there, especially because they were together. Entombment will follow the Mass in Mount St. Benedict Cemetery Mausoleum, 1 Cottage Grove Rd., Bloomfield. To extend online condolences and/or share a memory, please visit farleysullivan.com.
