Obituary for Marcella M. Tabara (Ouellette)

Tabara, Marcella (Ouellette), age 91 passed away on Friday, July 21, 2023. She was born on November 20, 1931 in Hartford to the late Ludger and Marie Ange (Roy) Ouellette and grew up in Hartford’s Frog Hollow neighborhood. She attended St. Anne’s Elementary School, Holy Trinity Junior High School and graduated from Hartford Public High School 1950. She was formerly employed by the London and Lancashire Insurance Company and the State of Connecticut. She was a communicant of St. Lawrence O’Toole Catholic Church in Hartford and currently, St. James Catholic Church in Rocky Hill.
Marcella loved meeting new people and made friends easily. She was active in the PTA at Batchelder Elementary School, the Rosary Alter Society at St. Lawrence O’Toole Church, Cub Scout Pack 105, McGinley-Crafa Little League, the Southwest Civic Association and the South Catholic High School Parents’ Club. She bowled with the Foster Heights Girls League for over 40 years. She loved dancing and often reminisced about attending Saturday night dances at the Colt Park Band Shell, Lithuanian Hall and at the Polish National Home in Hartford, where she met her husband, Stanley. With family and friends, they attended polka dances into their late 70’s.
Marcella and Stanley married on October 29, 1955 and raised their family in Hartford’s Foster Heights neighborhood where they hosted holiday gatherings, backyard picnics, graduation celebrations and enjoyed neighborhood get-togethers and beach days with their Mountain Street neighbors. In 2007, Marcella and Stanley moved to Rocky Hill where they continued their active social life. Always planning for the next casino excursion, Marcella loved playing penny and nickel slot machines in Atlantic City and at local casinos. She loved to travel and together, they enjoyed visiting Hammonasset Beach, large family picnics at Chatfield Hollow, vacations at Misquamicut Beach and Wildwood Crest NJ, as well as cruises to Bermuda and the Caribbean islands. They also visited Puerto Rico, Florida, Hawaii, Cape Cod and Maine, as well as historic sites up and down the east coast. For many years, Marcella prepared Monday night family dinners featuring her famous orange chicken, pork roast or meatloaf with mashed potatoes and a homemade cake, pie or cookies. She loved decorating the house at Christmas, sending Christmas greeting cards and baking favorite family recipes.
While Marcella had many interests, she most enjoyed spending time with her family. She treasured the one-on-one conversations and always listened before offering advice to her children and their spouses whom she regarded as her own.
Marcella leaves her husband of 67 years, Stanley of Newington, daughter Karen Bowen (John) of Newington, son Steven of Newington, son Robert (Susan) of North Granby, sister Estelle Dolan of Rocky Hill, brother Robert Ouellette of Newington and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents Ludger and Marie-Ange (Roy) Ouellette, brother Robert Ouellette (age 3) and sister Theresa MacDonald. She also leaves many friends from her bowling league, the Foster Heights ladies lunch group and the Mountain Street and Holly Hill Drive friends. Special thanks to the caring staff at Cedar Mountain Commons and Visiting Angels: Novlette, Lurlene and India who cared for Mom.
