Obituary for Lydia Zimmerman (Cardona)

Lydia Zimmerman, 77, of Glastonbury, passed away on January 9, 2023. She was born to the late Angel and Josephine (Jimenez) Cardona.
Lydia was a loving, generous and kind woman of many interests and had an intellectual curiosity about the world around her. She was an avid reader who always had a book in her hand, knit incredible sweaters for her family, loved gardening and all kinds of art and music. She was a benevolent woman who cared deeply about social issues.
Lydia had a long and varied career while she raised her children. She began her professional life as a teacher in the New York City public schools, while also working at a summer camp for severely physically and mentally challenged young adults. She went on to become a social worker, had a short stint as an executive producer for an NBC affiliate in West Hartford producing public affairs programs, and spent 17 years as an ombudsperson for Hamilton Standard in Connecticut. She was a graduate of Long Island University in Brooklyn, NY where she was born and raised.
Lydia cared deeply for all of her family, but she reserved a special place in her heart for her grandchildren. She was adored by her grandchildren Emily and Noah and she lived for their happiness. She delighted in sharing with them her love for reading, learning and creating. Above all she impressed in them a sense of intellectual curiosity and empathy.
Lydia will also be missed by her daughter, Amy Zimmerman and son, Jesse Zimmerman. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Emily and Noah Zimmerman, her sisters, JoAnne and Isabel and her nieces, nephews and extended family.
A private gathering was held this past weekend.
