Lucy J Privitera, of Rocky Hill, formerly of Wethersfield, passed away peacefully and joined her beloved husband Carmelo Privitera after a ten-year struggle with Alzheimer’s. Born December 7, 1926 in Hartford to Sebastian and Lucy (Alescio) Pappalardo, Lucy lived in Hartford for many years before moving to Wethersfield in 1971. She attended Hartford Public High School graduating in 1945. It was there she met the love of her life, Carmelo “Mel” Privitera. They married in 1950 and spent 67 years together before Mel’s passing. Lucy was an active Hartford High graduate as she and Mel worked tirelessly organizing the School reunions for 60 years.
For over 25 years, Lucy operated the business side of Pappalardo Brothers, her father’s and Uncle Paul’s Italian cheese business. She proudly worked at Hartford Hospital as a unit secretary for 25 years keeping Bliss 8 running smoothly and efficiently. She was often called on to help as a translator for Italian and Spanish speaking patients all over the hospital. She was a proud mother supporting all of her children’s school, social and sports activities. She was an active member at St Luke’s Parish in Hartford and later at the Church of the Incarnation in Wethersfield and St Mark’s Church in Westbrook. Lucy and Mel owned a summer home for many years where family and friends gathered for weekly Sunday pasta and special occasions. Lucy played in a bowling league for several years and she and Mel were long time members of Wethersfield Country Club where Lucy actively played in the Women’s Nine Hole Group.
Lucy loved cooking and baking for her family and would deliver her delicacies to friends and neighbors during difficult and celebratory times. Lucy was an avid New York Yankee and Notre Dame fan. She loved rooting for “The Fighting Irish” and enjoyed traveling to South Bend to attend games with Mel, her children and grandchildren.
Lucy leaves behind: her daughter Gaeann (Raymond) Cormier, her sons Paul (Jean) Privitera and Peter (Mary Ann) Privitera; her four grandchildren Diane (Chris) Savage, Matthew (Nicole) Cormier, Lynne (Rocco) Buccheri and Laurie Privitera; and her eight great grandchildren Eli & Annie Savage, Tyler, Cole & Lucy Cormier and Joseph, Sofia, & Julian Buccheri; her sister and best friend Frances Gorynski, brother-in-law William Ward and sister-in-law Dorothea Privitera. In addition to her husband Mel, Lucy is predeceased by her cherished granddaughter Sarah Ann Privitera, her sister Constance Ward, and brothers-in-law Raymond Gorynski and Salvatore Privitera.
Lucy’s family wishes to extend their deepest gratitude to the caring staff at The Residence at Ferry Park in Rocky Hill: their dedication, care and love was truly special. Services for Lucy will be private. The family will celebrate Lucy’s life with a Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of the Incarnation on Tuesday February 9, 2021. The Mass will be live streamed via Farleysullivan.com at 1:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of Connecticut, 200 Executive Square Blvd., Southington, CT 06489. The Farley-Sullivan Funeral Home has care of the arrangements.
