Obituary for Louis Spalla Jr.

Louis P. Spalla, Jr. passed away on January 17, 2024 at 11:21 a.m. at Northampton Post Acute Skilled Nursing Facility in Easton, PA. “Louie” was born June 26, 1928 and raised in Hartford, CT. After graduating from Bulkeley High School, he joined the Air National Guard and was stationed at Brainard Field in Hartford, CT. He was activated and served in the Korean War. After the war, he continued to work for The Guard in fuel supply at Bradley Field until retiring after 20 years of service to go into business with his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” Spalla. Together, they started a Connecticut construction company, Towne Homes Inc, that built quality homes in South Windsor and Glastonbury in the 1950’s and 60’s and several vacation homes in Vermont in years after. In 1964, they built Encore at the Slopes, a 48-room seasonal hotel and restaurant for skiers at the base of Mount Snow, VT, which they owned and operated for over 35 years. Louie and Betty, longtime residents of Glastonbury, CT, also enjoyed summer homes on Nantucket Island, MA for 22 years and in Searsport, ME for 20 years. Over the years, they traveled together extensively, including trips to Europe, South America and China. In 2008, they moved from Glastonbury to Ocala, FL. After Betty passed away in 2018, Lou moved in with his son and husband in Bushkill, PA until health and accessibility issues forced his move to Old Orchard Rehab in Easton, PA – now known as Northampton Post Acute. For most of his life when not at work, Louie was surrounded by his dogs. He raised and bred Siberian Huskies during his years running the hotel, and later in life switched to Lhasa Apsos, owning as many as seven at a time. Both breeds produced thoroughbred puppies, which he sold at nominal prices to find them loving homes. His favorite saying: “Love me, love my dogs.” Louis is survived by his son, John L. Spalla and his spouse Samuel A. Smith in Bushkill, PA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the ASPCA or your local animal shelter in his honor.
